Calgary Midnapore

Calgary Midnapore spans the city's deep south, stretching from the shores of the Bow River on the east to the city's southwestern boundary. Carved primarily from the former Calgary Southeast riding through the 2012 redistribution, it takes its name from the historic community of Midnapore, which predates its annexation by Calgary in 1961. The riding encompasses a mix of established lake communities and newer suburban developments, with Fish Creek Provincial Park — one of the largest urban parks in Canada at over 1,300 hectares — cutting through its northern section.

Candidates

Jason Kenney (Conservative) — First elected to Parliament in 1997 in the predecessor riding of Calgary Southeast, Kenney was one of the most prominent members of the Conservative caucus by 2015. He served in several senior cabinet posts, including Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism (2008 to 2013), Minister of Employment and Social Development (2013 to 2015), and Minister of National Defence (from February 2015), and was widely credited with expanding Conservative support among immigrant communities across Canada.

Haley Brown (Liberal) — A senior project manager at Telus, Brown won a contested Liberal nomination in July 2015. She was active in community fundraising, including work with Habitat for Humanity and the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society.

Laura Weston (NDP) — A lawyer who lived in the riding with her husband and young son, Weston campaigned on affordability issues affecting middle-class families in the riding.

Also running were Brennan Wauters (Green Party) and Peggy Askin (Marxist-Leninist).

About the Riding

The riding's residential character is defined by its lake communities — Midnapore, Sundance, Lake Bonavista, and McKenzie Lake — where homeowners' associations manage private lakes that serve as neighbourhood focal points. Newer subdivisions such as Cranston and Chaparral, developed from the early 2000s, pushed the city's suburban frontier southward toward the hamlet of De Winton. Fish Creek Provincial Park provides extensive trail networks for cycling, hiking, and cross-country skiing, and the Bow River corridor along the riding's eastern flank is popular with anglers. The Shawnessy shopping area serves as the riding's main commercial hub, and the South Health Campus, which opened in 2012, brought a major acute-care hospital to the deep south. The riding traditionally leaned heavily Conservative; under its previous configuration as Calgary Southeast, it had been held by a right-of-centre MP continuously since 1997. In 2015, falling oil prices and rising unemployment in the energy sector were pressing concerns for residents, many of whom commuted to downtown offices in the petroleum industry.
