Cypress Hills—Grasslands

Cypress Hills—Grasslands spans the southwestern corner of Saskatchewan, a vast expanse of ranch land, wheat fields, and mixed-grass prairie anchored by the city of Swift Current. The riding takes its name from the Cypress Hills—an elevated plateau rising above the surrounding plains—and Grasslands National Park, one of Canada’s few protected mixed-grass prairie ecosystems. The Great Sand Hills, covering approximately 1,900 square kilometres, are among the largest active sand dune formations in Canada.

Candidates

David Anderson (Conservative) — The incumbent since 2000, Anderson was first elected as a Canadian Alliance MP and transitioned to the Conservative Party after the 2003 merger. A farmer and businessman from the Frontier area, he held a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Regina and a Master of Divinity from the Canadian Theological Seminary. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 onward and previously held the parliamentary secretary role for Natural Resources and the Canadian Wheat Board.

Marvin Wiens (Liberal) — Wiens was a past president of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, one of the province’s largest agricultural cooperatives, before carrying the Liberal banner in the 2015 campaign.

Trevor Peterson (NDP) — Peterson ran as the NDP candidate in a riding that had been firmly Conservative for over a decade.

William Caton (Green Party) also ran in the riding.

About the Riding

Cattle ranching and dryland grain farming are the economic pillars of Cypress Hills—Grasslands, with the area’s semi-arid climate and short growing season shaping agricultural practices. Swift Current serves as the commercial and services hub for the region and hosts the annual Windscape Kite Festival. The Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, shared with Alberta, draws hikers and campers to its coniferous forests and elevated terrain—an ecological anomaly on the prairies. Lake Diefenbaker, Saskatchewan’s largest reservoir, provides irrigation water and recreation in the riding’s northeastern reaches. Clusters of Hutterite colonies contribute to the area’s agricultural output. Federal issues in 2015 centred on grain transportation logistics, livestock trade and country-of-origin labelling disputes with the United States, rural broadband access, and support for small-town infrastructure.
