About the Riding
Ottawa Centre is one of the most politically engaged ridings in the country, anchored by the federal public service and a large population of policy professionals, academics, and non-profit workers. The University of Ottawa campus sits near the riding's eastern edge, contributing to a younger demographic profile. The Glebe, with its independent shops along Bank Street, and the rapidly gentrifying Hintonburg neighbourhood give the riding a distinct urban village character. Transit was a prominent local concern heading into the election, as construction of the Confederation Line light rail project was underway through the downtown core. The riding had swung between the NDP and the Liberals over multiple elections, and the 2015 contest was widely viewed as a two-way race between Dewar and McKenna.
