Nipissing—Timiskaming

Covering more than fifteen thousand square kilometres of northeastern Ontario, Nipissing—Timiskaming was anchored by the city of North Bay at the eastern end of Lake Nipissing and extended northeast through the Timiskaming District to the town of Temiskaming Shores on the shore of Lake Timiskaming. The vast riding also included the communities of Callander, Powassan, and East Ferris to the south of North Bay, blending urban, small-town, and deeply rural landscapes.

Candidates

Anthony Rota (Liberal) — A North Bay native with a bachelor's degree in political science from Wilfrid Laurier University, a diploma in finance from Algonquin College, and an MBA from the University of Ottawa, Rota had previously represented the riding from 2004 to 2011. After losing in 2011 by eighteen votes following a judicial recount, he taught at Nipissing University in North Bay before returning to contest the seat again. Prior to his first election he had served as a city councillor on North Bay City Council.

Jay Aspin (Conservative) — The incumbent MP since 2011, Aspin was a local business advisor and economic development professional who had also served as a school board trustee for the Near North District School Board. His 2011 victory, secured by the narrowest of margins after a judicial recount, made the 2015 rematch with Rota one of the most closely watched races in Northern Ontario.

Kathleen Jodouin (NDP) — Jodouin worked as coordinator of the Women and HIV/AIDS Initiative for the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area. She had served on the boards of the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre and the Nipissing Community Legal Clinic.

Nicole Peltier (Green Party) — Peltier stood as the Green Party candidate in the riding.

About the Riding

North Bay served as the riding's economic centre, with health care, education, and retail trade ranking among the city's largest employment sectors. Canadian Forces Base North Bay, the heart of Canada's NORAD operations and home to space surveillance capabilities, was a significant military and civilian employer. Nipissing University and Canadore College anchored a growing post-secondary sector in the city. In the Timiskaming portion of the riding, the economy leaned toward forestry, agriculture, and mining, with smaller communities relying on resource extraction and public-sector services. Highway connectivity, access to health care specialists, and the economic challenges facing Northern Ontario's smaller municipalities were persistent concerns across this sprawling constituency.
