About the Riding
The Thousand Islands region, where the St. Lawrence River flows through a scenic archipelago of over 1,800 islands, anchors the riding's tourism economy. Brockville, the largest community, serves as a regional service centre along the Highway 401 corridor, while Gananoque markets itself as the gateway to the Thousand Islands. The town of Prescott sits near the Ogdensburg—Prescott International Bridge, one of the smaller Canada–U.S. border crossings. The Rideau Canal, running from Kingston to Ottawa, passes through the riding's northern reaches and is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important recreational waterway. The riding's economy draws on tourism, agriculture, small manufacturing, and public sector employment. Cross-border trade with New York State, the health of the St. Lawrence ecosystem, rural infrastructure, and access to health care services in scattered communities were recurring concerns during the 2011–2015 parliamentary term.
