About the Riding
Beaches—East York is one of Toronto’s most established residential communities. The Beaches neighbourhood, with its boardwalk, parkland, and proximity to the Woodbine Beach and Ashbridges Bay, has long attracted families and professionals. East York, once a separate borough before amalgamation with the City of Toronto in 1998, retains a distinct community identity centred on modest post-war housing and neighbourhood institutions. The riding’s commercial life revolves around the shops and restaurants along Queen Street East and the Danforth, while local employment draws on healthcare, education, and the broader Toronto economy. In 2015, the contest was a battle between the Liberal wave sweeping across Toronto and the NDP’s effort to hold seats won during the party’s 2011 surge. The riding had been represented by Liberal MP Maria Minna from 1993 until Kellway’s victory in 2011, making the Liberal bid to reclaim it a central campaign storyline.
