Riviere-des-Mille-Iles

North of Montreal on the mainland side of the Riviere des Mille Iles, this riding gathers suburban communities including the cities of Deux-Montagnes, Saint-Eustache, Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, and Boisbriand. Connected to the Island of Montreal by highways 13, 15, and 640, the riding functions as a bedroom community for the metropolis while maintaining its own commercial and industrial base.

The NDP's Laurin Liu won the seat in 2011 at the age of 20, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Commons. By 2015, the Liberal Party was surging nationally and locally, setting up a contest between the young NDP incumbent and a Liberal challenger with business and political experience.

Linda Lapointe (Liberal) — A businesswoman and grocery store owner, Lapointe held a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Universite de Montreal. She had also served as a member of the National Assembly for the ADQ in the riding of Groulx from 2007 to 2008, giving her experience in elected office.

Laurin Liu (NDP) — The incumbent since 2011, Liu had been a McGill University student studying history and cultural studies when she was swept into Parliament during the orange wave. In Ottawa she served as deputy critic for science and technology, international trade, and the environment, and introduced private members' bills on guaranteed income supplements for seniors and mortgage prepayment penalties.

Erick Gauthier (Conservative) — Gauthier carried the Conservative banner.

Alec Ware (Green Party) — Ware represented the Green Party.

About the Riding

The riding sits at the intersection of Montreal's commuter belt and the Laurentian recreational corridor. Saint-Eustache, the largest municipality, has deep historical roots—it was the site of a key battle during the 1837 Rebellion. Deux-Montagnes is the terminus of a commuter rail line into downtown Montreal, making transit infrastructure a perennial local issue. In 2015, residents were concerned about congestion on the aging road network, access to federal services in French, and economic development that could reduce the riding's dependence on Montreal-bound commuting.
