Halifax West stretches across the western suburbs of the Halifax Regional Municipality, taking in the communities of Bedford, Clayton Park, Fairview, Timberlea, Lakeside, and Hammonds Plains, with its southern boundary reaching toward Terence Bay on the Atlantic coast. A mix of established neighbourhoods and newer suburban developments, the riding had a population of roughly 100,000 and served as a bedroom community for workers commuting to downtown Halifax and the Burnside Industrial Park.
Candidates
Geoff Regan (Liberal) — A lawyer by training with degrees from St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie Law School, Regan had represented Halifax West in the House of Commons since 1993, with a gap between 1997 and 2000. He served as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans from 2003 to 2006 under Prime Minister Paul Martin, overseeing the designation of the Gully as a Marine Protected Area. Heading into 2015, he was among the longest-serving Liberals in Atlantic Canada.
Michael McGinnis (Conservative) — McGinnis was a member of the Halifax Community Health Board. During the campaign, he participated in candidate debates at Mount Saint Vincent University, where he argued that the federal government should not dictate how provinces allocate health care spending.
Joanne Hussey (NDP) — Hussey owned and operated Common Knowledge Research & Consulting, a Halifax-based firm. She focused her campaign on issues of income inequality and worker protections during candidate forums in the riding.
Richard Henryk Zurawski (Green Party) — Zurawski had spent nearly four decades as a meteorologist and science reporter for CBC, CTV, and Global Television. He brought a science communication background to the race, emphasizing environmental and climate policy.
About the Riding
Halifax West combined suburban growth corridors with pockets of older residential areas closer to the Halifax peninsula. Bedford, the riding's commercial hub, saw steady population increases through the 2000s and 2010s as families settled in newer subdivisions along the Larry Uteck and Hammonds Plains roads. The riding's economy depended heavily on government employment — both federal and provincial — along with retail, health care, and the professional services sector. Mount Saint Vincent University, located within the riding's boundaries, was a significant local institution and employer. Federal issues that resonated locally in 2015 included health care funding transfers, infrastructure spending for growing suburban communities, and veterans' services, given the riding's proximity to Canadian Forces Base Halifax. The riding had consistently supported Liberal candidates since 2000, and the broader Liberal sweep of all eleven Nova Scotia seats in 2015 underscored the province's decisive shift during that election.
