Dartmouth—Cole Harbour

Dartmouth—Cole Harbour occupies the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour and the suburban communities stretching east toward the Atlantic coast. The riding encompasses much of the city of Dartmouth — historically known as the City of Lakes — along with the suburban community of Cole Harbour and parts of Eastern Passage. Connected to downtown Halifax by two harbour bridges, the riding functions as a residential counterpart to the peninsula across the water.

Candidates

Darren Fisher (Liberal) — Fisher had served on Halifax Regional Council since 2009 as the councillor for District 6, representing the Harbourview-Burnside-Dartmouth East area. His municipal colleagues elected him Deputy Mayor in 2014. A lifelong Dartmouth resident, he brought local government experience to the federal race.

Robert Chisholm (NDP) — The incumbent MP, Chisholm had won the seat in the 2011 NDP wave, narrowly defeating Liberal Mike Savage. Chisholm brought a long political résumé: raised in Kentville, he studied at Acadia University and began his career as a research officer for the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour. He served as MLA for Halifax Atlantic from 1991 to 2003 and led the Nova Scotia NDP from 1996 to 2000, guiding the party to a then-record 19 seats in the 1998 provincial election.

Jason Cole (Conservative) — Cole was a Dartmouth pastor and businessman whose family operated Permacrete, a resurfacing company.

Brynn Nheiley (Green Party) — Nheiley represented the Green Party in the riding.

About the Riding

Dartmouth—Cole Harbour is predominantly a suburban riding whose residents commute across the harbour bridges or work in the commercial and light-industrial zones of Burnside and Woodside. The Burnside Industrial Park is one of Atlantic Canada's largest business parks. Cole Harbour, a residential community six kilometres east of downtown Dartmouth, is known for its trail networks, including the Salt Marsh Trail and nearby Rainbow Haven Beach Provincial Park. The riding's concerns in 2015 centred on commuter infrastructure — particularly the capacity of the two harbour bridges and public transit connections — along with health care wait times and the cost of living. The contest was shaped by the broader political dynamic across Atlantic Canada, where frustration with the Harper government on issues including Employment Insurance reform and Veterans Affairs cuts drove a strong tide of support toward the Liberals.
