Cape Breton—Canso

Cape Breton—Canso wraps around the western, southern, and eastern coastlines of Cape Breton Island and reaches across the Strait of Canso to include Guysborough County and portions of the mainland. The riding traces a broad arc from Chéticamp and the Acadian communities along the Gulf of St. Lawrence shore, through the former coal towns of Glace Bay and Dominion, past Louisbourg, and south through St. Peters to Port Hawkesbury, Canso, and Guysborough.

Candidates

Rodger Cuzner (Liberal) — Born and raised in Glace Bay, Cuzner studied physical education at St. Francis Xavier University and began his career in recreation and special events management with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. He was first elected to represent the predecessor riding of Bras d'Or—Cape Breton in the 2000 general election and had held the seat through four subsequent general elections. In Parliament he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister under Jean Chrétien in 2003 and later became the Liberal critic for human resources and labour.

Adam Daniel Rodgers (Conservative) — A Port Hawkesbury lawyer, Rodgers served as president of the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce.

Michelle Smith (NDP) — Smith carried the NDP standard in the riding.

Maria Goretti Coady (Green Party) — Coady represented the Green Party in the contest.

About the Riding

Cape Breton—Canso encompasses communities shaped by successive waves of economic transition. The coal mines and steel mill that once drove industrial Cape Breton are gone — the last mine and the Sydney steel plant both closed in 2001. The multi-year cleanup of the Sydney Tar Ponds, one of Canada's most contaminated sites, was a federally and provincially funded effort that concluded in 2013. Tourism has grown in importance, with the Cabot Trail, the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, and Celtic and Acadian cultural festivals drawing visitors. The fishing industry remains vital, particularly the lobster fishery, while the deep-water, ice-free port at the Strait of Canso supports industrial and shipping operations. Five Mi'kmaw communities — including Eskasoni, the largest Mi'kmaw community in the country — are located within the riding. Persistent challenges include above-average unemployment, population decline, and reliance on seasonal employment.
