Egmont

Egmont stretches across western Prince Edward Island from the city of Summerside to the island's North Cape, covering a landscape of farmland, fishing harbours, and small towns. The riding takes in communities including Tignish, Alberton, O'Leary, Wellington, and Miscouche, as well as the industrial parks at Slemon Park — a redeveloped former Canadian Forces base — and Bloomfield Corner.

Candidates

Bobby Morrissey (Liberal) — Born in Tignish, Morrissey brought extensive political experience to the race. He had represented the riding of 1st Prince in the provincial legislature from 1982 to 1996, winning four consecutive elections, and later served as MLA for Tignish-DeBlois from 1996 to 2000. During his time in provincial politics, he held cabinet portfolios including Transportation and Public Works, Industry, and Economic Development and Tourism.

Gail Shea (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, Shea had first won the Egmont seat in 2008. Before entering federal politics she served in the PEI legislature for Tignish-DeBlois from 2000 to 2007, holding portfolios including Community and Cultural Affairs and Transportation and Public Works. In Ottawa she served as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and later as Minister of National Revenue under Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Herb Dickieson (NDP) — A physician who established a family medicine practice in O'Leary after graduating from Dalhousie medical school, Dickieson was the first and only NDP member ever elected to the PEI legislature, serving as party leader through the 1996 and 2000 provincial campaigns. His federal candidacy drew an endorsement visit from Stephen Lewis, the activist and former Ontario NDP leader.

Nils Ling (Green Party) — Ling is an author, playwright, humorist, and former CBC Radio broadcaster based in Breadalbane. He toured extensively with his one-man show The Truth About Daughters and served as president of the Island Media Arts Co-op.

About the Riding

Egmont's economy rests on agriculture and fisheries, with potato farming and lobster harvesting anchoring the rural communities that stretch along its coastline. Summerside, the riding's largest centre, hosts Prince County Hospital and a Canada Revenue Agency processing centre. The former CFB Summerside, whose closure was announced in 1989 and completed in the early 1990s, was redeveloped as Slemon Park and now houses aerospace and manufacturing firms. With an average income well below the national figure, cost of living and seasonal employment gaps weigh heavily on residents, and EI eligibility rules remain a pressing concern for workers whose livelihoods depend on the rhythms of planting, harvesting, and fishing seasons.
