Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill is a suburban riding in York Region, situated on the northern fringe of the Greater Toronto Area approximately 25 kilometres north of downtown Toronto. In 2011, the riding encompassed much of the Town of Richmond Hill, a rapidly growing municipality perched on the Oak Ridges Moraine. The area had experienced significant population growth, reaching approximately 185,500 residents by the 2011 census.

Candidates

Costas Menegakis (Conservative) — Menegakis was a businessman and entrepreneur who held a degree in business from Concordia University's Faculty of Commerce. He served as president and CEO of a national marketing and logistics company. He was active in community organizations including the Richmond Hill Board of Trade, the Rotary Club of York, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Oak Ridges Lions Club, where he had volunteered for over 30 years. He lived with his family in the Oak Ridges area of Richmond Hill.

Bryon Wilfert (Liberal) — Wilfert was the incumbent, first elected in 1997 and returned in every subsequent election through 2008. He held Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Toronto and a degree in public administration from St. Lawrence College. Before entering federal politics, he taught history and political science at Havergal College in Toronto from 1977 to 1997 and was elected as a Richmond Hill municipal councillor in 1985. In Parliament, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and later Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment. He was also co-chair of the Canada-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Group.

Adam DeVita (NDP) — DeVita was a professional engineer with a degree from the University of Toronto and over 15 years of experience in the high-technology sector, specializing in software design, computer electronics, and quality management systems. A lifelong Richmond Hill resident, he had volunteered with the Richmond Hill NDP for a decade and served as the riding association's president.

Cameron W. Hastings (Green Party) — Hastings stood as the Green Party candidate in the riding.

About the Riding

Richmond Hill is one of the most linguistically diverse communities in Canada. In the 2011 census, more than 55 percent of residents reported a non-official language as their mother tongue, with Cantonese, Persian (Farsi), and Mandarin among the most commonly spoken languages. The town sits at a relatively high elevation compared to other GTA communities, with its northern reaches touching the environmentally significant Oak Ridges Moraine — a glacial landform that serves as a critical groundwater recharge area for southern Ontario.

The riding's economy is driven largely by small and medium-sized businesses in the commercial and professional services sectors, complemented by a significant commuter population that travels south to Toronto for work. The Highway 7 and Yonge Street corridors serve as the primary commercial arteries. Richmond Hill's rapid growth had placed pressure on local infrastructure, particularly transit connections to Toronto, school capacity, and green space preservation on the Moraine.

Key federal issues heading into 2011 included immigration and settlement services for the riding's large newcomer population, transit infrastructure investment — particularly the proposed Yonge Street subway extension into York Region — protection of the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the economic integration of skilled immigrants into the workforce.
