Don Valley East

Don Valley East is a federal riding in the northeast section of Toronto, covering a swath of the former city of North York east of the Don River valley. The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Flemingdon Park, Don Mills, Parkwoods, Victoria Village, and the Graydon Hall area. It stretches roughly from Eglinton Avenue in the south to Sheppard Avenue in the north, bounded by the Don Valley Parkway on its western edge.

Candidates

Joe Daniel (Conservative) — Daniel was a telecommunications engineer who had immigrated to Canada from Tanzania in 1987. Born to a family of Malayali Indian descent, he earned a bachelor's degree in telecommunications engineering from Plymouth University in the United Kingdom and a master's degree in the same field from the University of Toronto. Before entering politics, he worked in the telecommunications and defence sectors, beginning his career with Westland Helicopters before coming to Canada on a contract with the Canadian military. He became the first Canadian MP of Malayali Indian descent when he won this seat.

Yasmin Ratansi (Liberal) — Ratansi was the incumbent MP, first elected in Don Valley East in 2004 when she succeeded retiring Liberal MP David Collenette. Born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, she immigrated to Canada in 1974 and became a Certified General Accountant. Before entering Parliament, she worked as a management consultant, including positions with Laventhol and Horwath and Venture Edge Consulting, and conducted operational reviews of major Crown corporations. She served as treasurer of the Liberal Party's Ontario wing from 1993 to 1997 and was the first Muslim woman elected to the House of Commons.

Mary Trapani Hynes (NDP) — Trapani Hynes was the NDP candidate in Don Valley East. She was active in local education advocacy and later ran as a candidate for school board trustee in the Toronto District School Board's Ward 17.

Akil Sadikali (Green Party) — Sadikali was the Green Party candidate in Don Valley East.

Ryan Kidd ran for the Christian Heritage Party.

About the Riding

Don Valley East is one of Toronto's most ethnically diverse ridings, with large South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern communities concentrated in its apartment clusters and post-war subdivisions. Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village are densely populated neighbourhoods with significant immigrant populations, many of whom arrived as newcomers to Canada. Don Mills, developed in the 1950s as one of Canada's first master-planned suburban communities, anchors the riding's middle-class residential core. The area's economy is shaped by its proximity to major employment corridors along the Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton Avenue, with the Ontario Science Centre serving as a prominent local institution. The riding includes significant commercial development along Sheppard Avenue and around the Don Mills subway station. By 2011, transit was a major local concern, with discussions about extending rapid transit along Sheppard Avenue and the proposed Eglinton crosstown light rail line. Affordable housing, immigrant settlement services, and access to employment training were persistent issues in the riding's lower-income apartment neighbourhoods.
