Situated in the Lanaudière region northeast of Montreal, Montcalm was a mixed suburban-rural riding that encompassed the Montcalm regional county municipality, the city of Mascouche, and portions of the city of Terrebonne including the La Plaine and Lachenaie districts. The riding combined rapidly growing bedroom communities in the south with more traditional rural municipalities to the north.

About the Riding
Montcalm's character was defined by the tension between its rapidly suburbanizing southern tier and its quieter rural north. Mascouche, with a population exceeding 40,000 by 2011, was one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the Montreal metropolitan area, attracting young families seeking affordable housing with access to the city via Highway 25 and Highway 640. The La Plaine and Lachenaie sectors of Terrebonne contributed additional suburban population.
The northern portion of the riding was more traditionally rural, with municipalities like Sainte-Julienne (the seat of the Montcalm MRC), Saint-Liguori, Saint-Lin—Laurentides, and Saint-Calixte. Agriculture, including dairy farming and market gardening, remained important in these communities. The construction sector was a significant employer across the broader Lanaudière region, reflecting the area's ongoing residential development.
Federal issues in the riding reflected its dual character: suburban residents were concerned with commuter transportation infrastructure, highway improvements, and services for growing communities, while the rural north focused on agricultural support and preservation of farmland. The riding had been solidly Bloc territory since its creation, and the 2011 campaign tested whether the NDP's province-wide surge could reach into Lanaudière's traditionally sovereigntist heartland.
