Charlottetown

The riding of Charlottetown covers the provincial capital of Prince Edward Island, a city of approximately 34,500 people as of the 2011 census. Formed through the 1995 amalgamation of the former city with surrounding communities including Sherwood, Parkdale, West Royalty, East Royalty, Winsloe, and Hillsborough Park, the riding encompasses the full extent of the amalgamated municipality. The city sits on the southern shore of the island along Hillsborough Bay, at the confluence of the North, West, and Hillsborough rivers.

Candidates

Sean Casey (Liberal) — A lawyer who joined the Atlantic Canadian firm Stewart McKelvey in 1989 and became a partner in 1993. Casey left the firm in 2003 to serve as president of the Paderno Group of Companies, a Canadian cookware manufacturer headquartered in Charlottetown, before returning to Stewart McKelvey as managing partner. He resigned to seek the Liberal nomination after four-term incumbent Shawn Murphy announced in October 2010 that he would not run again.

Donna Profit (Conservative) — Profit carried the Conservative banner in Charlottetown, running in a riding where the party had not won since the Progressive Conservative era. Limited publicly available biographical information was recorded at the time of the 2011 campaign.

Joe Byrne (NDP) — A community organizer and former Roman Catholic missionary who spent seven years in the Dominican Republic before returning to PEI. Byrne served as director of youth ministry at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown for twelve years, and by the time of the 2011 campaign had taken on a role as community connections supervisor with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada. A longtime NDP activist, the 2011 race was his first federal candidacy.

Eliza Knockwood (Green Party) — Knockwood was a Mi'kmaq filmmaker and media professional from Prince Edward Island who carried the Green Party banner in Charlottetown.

Baird Judson ran for the Christian Heritage Party, as he had in previous federal elections in the riding.

About the Riding

Charlottetown is the seat of the Prince Edward Island provincial government and home to both the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College's Prince of Wales campus, making government, education, and health care the dominant employers. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital serves as the region's primary acute care facility. The city's economy also relies on tourism, with the historic downtown, Province House National Historic Site — the birthplace of Confederation — and the wider Anne of Green Gables tourism industry drawing visitors each summer. The Charlottetown Airport, located in the Sherwood area, provides air access to the island.

The riding was overwhelmingly English-speaking, with roughly 88 percent of residents reporting English as their mother tongue in the 2011 census. The median age was 42.3 years, somewhat older than the national median, reflecting PEI's broader demographic profile. With four-term Liberal incumbent Shawn Murphy stepping aside, the 2011 race represented an open seat contest — a rarity in Atlantic Canada, where incumbency advantages tend to be strong.
