Calgary Heritage

Calgary Heritage is a federal electoral district in the southwestern quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. The by-election of July 24, 2023 was called following the resignation of Conservative MP Bob Benzen, who announced in October 2022 that he would resign by year's end to return to the private sector. The seat was officially vacated on December 31, 2022.

Candidates

Shuv Majumdar (Conservative) — Shuvaloy Majumdar is a former policy adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Conservative Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. He served as global director for Harper & Associates, the former prime minister's international consulting firm, and was the founding foreign policy director and Munk Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. He was born in Calgary and attended the University of Calgary.

Elliot Weinstein (Liberal) — Weinstein is the owner and president of The Beach YYC, an indoor beach recreation facility in Calgary. He previously worked as a project manager at Golder Associates, a global environmental consulting firm.

Gurmit Bhachu (NDP) — Bhachu is an elementary school teacher and communications chair for the Calgary Public Teachers' Association Local 38. He previously ran as the NDP candidate in Calgary Midnapore during the 2021 federal election.

Kelly Lorencz (People's Party) — Lorencz ran as the People's Party of Canada's candidate, described by the party as their "western lieutenant." He had previously run for the PPC in the 2019 federal election.

About the Riding

Calgary Heritage covers the southwestern suburbs of Calgary, taking in established residential neighbourhoods such as Haysboro, Kingsland, Southwood, Cedarbrae, Oakridge, Braeside, Canyon Meadows, Woodbine, Evergreen, Bridlewood, and Shawnee Slopes, as well as the more affluent enclaves of Eagle Ridge, Bayview, Pump Hill, and Lakeview near the Glenmore Reservoir.

The riding's population was approximately 109,100 in the 2021 census. It is predominantly a suburban, middle-to-upper-income district characterized by single-family homes, mature tree-lined streets in its older northern neighbourhoods, and newer suburban developments in its southern reaches near Fish Creek Provincial Park. The Glenmore Reservoir and its surrounding pathway system provide significant recreational green space.

The economy is closely tied to Calgary's energy sector, with many residents commuting to downtown offices or working in the engineering, financial, and professional services that support the oil and gas industry. Retail and commercial activity is concentrated along Macleod Trail, which runs north-south through the riding, and at Southcentre Mall. The median individual income was approximately $46,000 in 2020.
