York—Simcoe

York—Simcoe is a federal riding in south-central Ontario, covering communities north of Toronto near the southern shore of Lake Simcoe. The by-election was called following the retirement of Conservative MP Peter Van Loan, who announced on July 29, 2018, that he would leave Parliament after fourteen years of service. Van Loan, who had served as Leader of the Government in the House of Commons under Prime Minister Stephen Harper and held several cabinet portfolios, retired effective September 30, 2018, to return to practising law.

Candidates

Scot Davidson (Conservative) — A businessman born in Georgina, Ontario, who held a bachelor's degree in economics from York University. His business ventures included a coffee shop, a bar, a marina and ice fishing operation, and the Fish Crisp company, which was eventually acquired by McCormick Canada.

Shaun Tanaka (Liberal) — A former geography professor at Queen's University and the University of Toronto who grew up in Mount Albert and lived in Sharon. She had previously run as the Liberal candidate in the riding in 2015 and was involved with the Sharon Temple Museum Society, the East Gwillimbury Public Library, and the Maytree Foundation.

Jessa McLean (NDP) — The NDP's acclaimed candidate for the by-election.

Mathew Lund (Green Party) and Robert Geurts (People's Party) also contested the by-election, along with Dorian Baxter for the Progressive Canadian Party.

About the Riding

York—Simcoe encompasses the municipalities of Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Bradford West Gwillimbury, and the portion of King Township north of Regional Road 31. The riding stretches from the agricultural lands south of Lake Simcoe to the lake's southern shore, including communities such as Keswick, Sutton, Jackson's Point, Mount Albert, Holland Landing, Queensville, Sharon, and Bradford. It also includes the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.

The riding has a mix of rural agricultural land, small towns, and growing suburban communities that have experienced rapid residential development as part of the Greater Toronto Area's northward expansion. Bradford West Gwillimbury and East Gwillimbury in particular have seen significant population growth. Agriculture remains important to the local economy, particularly in the Holland Marsh area near Bradford, one of Ontario's most productive vegetable-growing regions.

The population is predominantly English-speaking, with about three-quarters identifying as white and growing South Asian, Chinese, and West Asian communities reflecting the area's increasing diversity as development continues.
