Mississauga—Malton centres on the Malton neighbourhood in northeastern Mississauga, immediately north of Toronto Pearson International Airport. Progressive Conservative Deepak Anand had represented the riding since 2018 and served during the 43rd Parliament as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Colleges and Universities. While the riding continued to face the structural challenges associated with its proximity to the airport — including geographic isolation from the rest of Mississauga — the 2022–2025 term saw concrete progress on long-standing community priorities, particularly around youth services.
Candidates
Deepak Anand (Progressive Conservative) — Anand was born in Patiala, Punjab, India, studied chemical engineering at Panjab University, and immigrated to Canada in 2000. He worked his way from lab technician to quality manager in the automotive industry before earning an MBA from the Schulich School of Business. He is a long-time Mississauga resident.
Jawad Haroon (Liberal) — Haroon holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering and is a professional engineer with a 15-year career in the energy industry. A Malton resident since the 1990s, he has served as director of the Mississauga—Malton Provincial Liberal Association and sat on the committee for the Malton Community Building Project Network.
Gerard McDonald (NDP) — McDonald was the Ontario NDP’s nominated candidate in the riding.
The remaining candidates included Arish Esmail for the Green Party and Van Nguyen for the New Blue Party.
Local Issues
Youth services and community infrastructure saw meaningful progress during the 2022–2025 term. The Malton Youth Hub Jonathan Davis Centre, a 12.6-million-dollar facility, opened in late 2023, providing a dedicated space for employment and skills development programs, mental health and substance use counselling, and community programming for young people aged 12 to 25. The hub included a community kitchen, a music recording studio, and space for wraparound social services. The facility was a direct response to the persistent youth unemployment challenges in the Malton area.
Community safety remained a significant concern. The memory of the 2020 fatal police shooting of Ejaz Choudry during a mental health crisis call continued to inform community advocacy around policing reform and mental health response models. Residents pushed for continued investment in alternative crisis response teams and community-based violence prevention initiatives.
The riding’s proximity to Pearson Airport continued to shape its economic character. While the airport zone provided industrial and logistics employment, residents continued to call for greater diversity of economic opportunity and improved transit connections linking Malton to the broader Mississauga community. The area still lacked a local hospital, and access to health care services remained a concern given the riding’s socioeconomic profile.
