Mississauga—Malton is centred on the Malton neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Mississauga, situated just north of Toronto Pearson International Airport. The proximity to the airport creates a physical barrier that has historically isolated Malton from the rest of the city both socially and politically. Progressive Conservative Deepak Anand won the seat in 2018 and served as a backbench MPP during the 42nd Parliament. The riding faced significant socioeconomic challenges, including a youth unemployment rate of approximately 25 percent, making it one of the more economically disadvantaged districts in the Mississauga area.
Candidates
Deepak Anand (Progressive Conservative) — Anand was born in Patiala, Punjab, India, studied chemical engineering at Panjab University, and immigrated to Canada in 2000. He started as a lab technician at an automotive factory and worked his way up to quality manager in the automotive industry. He later earned an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and worked as a reporting analyst at Morguard Investments before running an auto parts business.
Aman Gill (Liberal) — Gill was born in Mississauga and holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences with a minor in Psychology from McMaster University. He previously worked as a policy intern in the Office of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development in Ottawa and as a caseworker in the constituency office of the federal MP for Mississauga—Malton.
Waseem Ahmed (NDP) — Ahmed is an entrepreneur who runs an IT business in the riding. He serves as the President of IPC Jame Masjid, a not-for-profit organization in Mississauga, and has volunteered with the Mississauga Food Bank.
The remaining candidates included Robert Chan for the Green Party and Van Nguyen for the New Blue Party.
Local Issues
Youth unemployment was the most pressing issue in Mississauga—Malton. With approximately 25 percent of youth in the area unemployed and 28 percent reporting they felt excluded and were not involved in any extracurricular activities, the lack of economic opportunity for young people was a persistent concern. Anand had raised youth employment as a priority in his first major speech in the legislature in August 2018, but critics questioned whether sufficient progress had been made.
Policing and community safety were deeply felt issues following the fatal police shooting of Ejaz Choudry on June 20, 2020. Choudry, a 62-year-old father of four who suffered from schizophrenia, was shot by Peel Regional Police officers responding to a mental health crisis call at his apartment on Morning Star Drive in Malton. The incident galvanized the community, leading to the formation of the Malton People’s Movement, which advocated for police accountability and reform of how officers respond to mental health emergencies. Peel Regional Police had earlier launched Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Teams pairing crisis workers with specially trained officers, but the Choudry case underscored that systemic gaps remained.
The riding also faced structural challenges related to its geographic isolation. Malton had no dedicated police division and lacked a local hospital, while many social service agencies operated from locations outside the neighbourhood. The area’s economy was dominated by airport-adjacent industrial and transportation-related activities, with few white-collar employment opportunities nearby.
