Long Range Mountains is a sprawling federal electoral district that covers the entire west coast of Newfoundland, from Channel-Port aux Basques and Burgeo in the south to St. Anthony and L'Anse aux Meadows at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. The riding takes its name from the Long Range Mountains, a section of the Appalachian chain that forms the spine of western Newfoundland. Major population centres include Corner Brook, Stephenville, Deer Lake, and Port aux Basques.
The riding is geographically diverse and among the largest on the island, encompassing fjords, boreal forest, coastal barrens, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gros Morne National Park. Corner Brook, the largest city in the riding and the second largest on the island, serves as the regional hub for healthcare, education, and commerce. Outgoing Liberal MP Gudie Hutchings did not seek re-election.
Candidates
Carol Anstey (Conservative) is a real estate agent and author from western Newfoundland who studied sociology at Acadia University and completed a paralegal course at Academy Canada in Corner Brook. Anstey had previously contested the riding in 2021, losing to incumbent Gudie Hutchings by fewer than 2,000 votes. She became the first woman to represent Newfoundland and Labrador as a Conservative MP.
Don Bradshaw (Liberal) was born and raised in Corner Brook and spent 36 years as a journalist, beginning at The Western Star newspaper before joining NTV News as an on-air reporter covering all of western Newfoundland. He won a National News Award in 1995 for his coverage of the Canada Winter Games. Bradshaw retired from journalism to seek the Liberal nomination.
Sarah Parsons (NDP) is a child and youth care worker and single mother of two from Corner Brook. A proud NAPE union member, she became involved with the provincial NDP as the party's western regional representative and campaigned on childcare affordability, healthcare, and workers' rights.
Robbie Coles (Independent) is the mayor of Cormack and works on the Hibernia offshore oil platform. He also operates a family farm in Reidville. With eight years of municipal politics experience, Coles ran as an independent, arguing he could better represent constituents free of party constraints.
Pamela Geiger (People's Party) lives in Cox's Cove and has been promoting the PPC platform since 2020. An entrepreneur and single mother, she ran to encourage critical thinking about issues affecting Canadians.
About the Riding
The Long Range Mountains riding stretches over 700 kilometres of coastline, from the ferry terminal at Channel-Port aux Basques — the province's main link to mainland Canada via Marine Atlantic — to the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In between lie the dramatic fjords of Gros Morne National Park, the paper-mill heritage of Corner Brook, the former military base at Stephenville, and dozens of small fishing communities.
The economy is rooted in natural resources. Corner Brook's pulp and paper mill, now operated by Kruger Products, remains an important employer, while the fishery sustains communities along both the west coast and the Northern Peninsula. Tourism is a growing sector, driven by Gros Morne and the Viking Trail, and Deer Lake's regional airport serves as the gateway for visitors. Stephenville has positioned itself as a potential hub for wind energy development, with several large-scale projects under consideration.
Healthcare access was one of the most pressing issues in the 2025 campaign. Residents on the Northern Peninsula face travel times of up to 12 hours to reach specialist care in St. John's, and even Corner Brook's regional hospital serves a vast catchment area with limited capacity. The ferry service between Port aux Basques and North Sydney — guaranteed under Term 32 of Newfoundland's Terms of Union with Canada — was also a concern, with residents worried about potential service reductions outside the summer tourist season. Cost of living, housing shortages, and the out-migration of young people were recurring themes across the riding.
