Sturgeon River—Parkland wraps around Edmonton's northwestern and western perimeter, taking in a broad arc of communities in the greater Edmonton capital region. The riding encompasses Parkland County, Sturgeon County, and Lac Ste. Anne County, along with the cities and towns of Spruce Grove (population approximately 37,600 in the 2021 census), Stony Plain (population roughly 18,000), Morinville (population approximately 10,400), and the smaller communities of Gibbons, Redwater, and Legal. The riding also includes several First Nations communities, notably Alexander First Nation and Enoch Cree Nation. The Sturgeon River — from which the riding takes half its name — flows eastward through Sturgeon County toward the North Saskatchewan River, while the Parkland portion references the aspen parkland biome that characterizes the rolling landscape west of Edmonton.
Candidates
Dane Lloyd (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, first elected in an October 2017 by-election following the resignation of Rona Ambrose. Born in St. Albert and raised on a family farm near Spruce Grove, Lloyd graduated from Edmonton Christian High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Trinity Western University. Before entering politics, he worked as a special assistant to then-Minister of International Trade Ed Fast and later as a parliamentary adviser to St. Albert—Edmonton MP Michael Cooper. Lloyd holds a commission as an infantry officer in the Governor General's Foot Guards, with the rank of captain.
Kendra Mills (NDP) — A Stony Plain resident and educator who campaigned on economic innovation, job creation, and environmental sustainability. A lifelong resident of the region, Mills emphasized the need for retraining programs and support for workers transitioning out of traditional resource industries.
Murray MacKinnon (PPC) — Born in northern Alberta and a longtime resident of the greater Edmonton area. MacKinnon has spent most of his career in sales to the oil and gas, construction, mining, and oilsands sectors. He serves as a Métis councillor in his second term with the Papaschase Cree Nation, with a portfolio covering consultation, economic development, and legal and land claims.
Irene Walker (Liberal) — A retired nurse who turned to volunteerism after her career, affiliating with Crimestoppers, the local food bank, and Rotary clubs in the region. Walker was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate for the riding.
About the Riding
Sturgeon River—Parkland is a riding defined by the interplay between Edmonton's suburban expansion and the agricultural and resource economy of the surrounding counties. Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, situated along Highway 16 west of Edmonton, have experienced steady growth as commuter communities for workers employed in the capital. Both cities offer a mix of retail, light industrial, and service-sector employment, though many residents make the daily drive into Edmonton. Morinville, to the north, is a historically francophone community — one of several in Sturgeon County that trace their roots to Quebec and French-Canadian Métis settlers.
Agriculture remains a pillar of the riding's rural economy. Parkland County and Sturgeon County are among the Edmonton region's most productive farming areas, with grain, canola, cattle, and mixed farming operations spread across the landscape. The transition zone between prairie grassland and boreal forest gives the riding a varied terrain of cropland, pasture, wooded areas, and wetlands.
Oil and gas activity — including well sites, pipelines, and service companies — provides additional employment in the rural portions of the constituency. The energy sector downturn weighed on some communities, particularly in Lac Ste. Anne County, where smaller operators scaled back operations. Pipeline politics and resource development policy were prominent issues for many constituents, who viewed federal energy and environmental regulations as having a direct impact on local livelihoods.
The riding's First Nations communities add important social and cultural dimensions. Alexander First Nation, located northwest of Morinville, and Enoch Cree Nation, on the western edge of Edmonton, are among the larger reserves in the capital region. Issues of reconciliation, clean water infrastructure, housing, and economic self-determination were central concerns for Indigenous residents and featured in campaign discourse heading into the 2021 election.
