Lethbridge

Lethbridge encompasses the city of Lethbridge and the surrounding agricultural lands of Lethbridge County in southern Alberta. The city of Lethbridge, with a 2021 population of 98,406, sits on the banks of the Oldman River roughly 215 kilometres southeast of Calgary and 105 kilometres northwest of the Canada–United States border. The riding also includes the nearby towns of Coaldale, Coalhurst, Nobleford, and Picture Butte, as well as the Village of Barons. The broader federal electoral district covers approximately 20,278 square kilometres, though the vast majority of residents live within the city itself. Lethbridge is the commercial and institutional hub of southern Alberta, home to the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic (formerly Lethbridge College).

Candidates

Rachael Harder (Conservative) Born in Calgary and raised on a small horse farm in Kathryn, Alberta, Harder (now Rachael Thomas) started a dog-breeding and boarding kennel business at age 11, using the proceeds to fund international humanitarian missions and her university education. She graduated with Great Distinction from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology. She also graduated from Briercrest College and Seminary in Saskatchewan, where she was named Young Alumnus of the Year in 2012. First elected in 2015 as the first woman to represent the traditionally Conservative riding, she served as official opposition critic for multiple portfolios including Youth, Status of Women, and Digital Government.

Elaine Perez (NDP) A sociology student at the University of Lethbridge, Perez ran on a platform centred on affordable housing, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and expanding universal health care to include dental, vision, and prescription medication coverage. Her candidacy drew support from younger voters energized by NDP leader Jagmeet Singh's national profile.

Devon Hargreaves (Liberal) Originally from Fort McMurray, Hargreaves worked in insurance and non-profit leadership in Lethbridge. During his two years as Chair of Lethbridge Pride Fest, the organization won the City of Lethbridge's "Celebrate Downtown" Event of the Year award. He co-founded the YQueerL Society for Change and was a leader in the movement to ban conversion therapy. He also ran as a provincial Liberal candidate in Lethbridge-East in 2019.

Kimmie Hovan (PPC) The People's Party candidate for Lethbridge, Hovan sought to offer a populist alternative in a riding where the Conservatives have dominated federal elections for decades.

About the Riding

Lethbridge owes its existence to coal mining and the Canadian Pacific Railway, but its modern economy is driven by agriculture, education, and research. The city sits at the centre of one of Canada's most productive irrigated farming regions. The Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District and the St. Mary River Irrigation District channel water from the Oldman River and its tributaries to more than 500,000 acres of cropland, supporting sugar beets, potatoes, pulse crops, canola, and specialty vegetables. The riding is home to numerous feedlots, and southern Alberta's beef cattle industry—from ranch to packing plant—is a major economic driver.

The University of Lethbridge, established in 1967, enrolls approximately 8,700 students and is particularly recognized for its neuroscience research, with faculty members having received international recognition in the field. Lethbridge Polytechnic complements the university with applied programs in agriculture, trades, and technology. The city also hosts Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, one of the federal government's largest agricultural research facilities, which has operated since 1906 and conducts work on crop science, animal health, and environmental sustainability.

The Oldman River valley, which bisects the city, has been preserved as one of the largest urban park systems in North America, encompassing approximately 16 square kilometres of coulees, river bottomlands, and prairie grassland. The valley hosts an extensive trail network and the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. Southern Alberta's position in a wind corridor between the Rocky Mountains and the open prairie has made the broader Lethbridge region a focus of wind energy development, and Lethbridge Polytechnic operates the International Wind Energy Academy with a full-scale training turbine on campus.
