Elmwood--Transcona

Elmwood--Transcona occupies the northeastern quadrant of Winnipeg, combining the working-class riverside neighbourhood of Elmwood with the railway community of Transcona and portions of East Kildonan and North Kildonan. The riding's population stood at 101,691 in the 2021 census. Elmwood, the only part of historic pre-amalgamation Winnipeg situated east of the Red River, developed as an industrial suburb in the late nineteenth century along rail lines radiating from the Louise Bridge. Transcona was purpose-built beginning in 1908 as the repair and maintenance centre for the Grand Trunk Pacific and National Transcontinental railways — its name a portmanteau of "transcontinental" and Lord Strathcona.

Candidates

Daniel Blaikie (NDP) holds a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy from the University of Winnipeg and a master's in philosophy from Concordia University, and later trained as an electrician before entering politics. He is the son of Bill Blaikie, who served as an NDP MP and Manitoba MLA. Daniel Blaikie was first elected in Elmwood--Transcona in 2015, continuing the riding's long NDP tradition.

Rejeanne Caron (Conservative) served for 27 years with the Winnipeg Police Service, training as an intelligence analyst at the Canadian Police College and working on organized crime and firearms portfolios while seconded to Criminal Intelligence Services Manitoba. She participated in the Winnipeg Safe Cities Initiative — a partnership with the UN Women Safe Cities Global Initiative — and sat on a steering committee to develop a strategy to end gender-based homelessness in Winnipeg.

Sara Mirwaldt (Liberal) carried the Liberal banner in a riding where the party typically finishes third, seeking to present an alternative to the NDP-Conservative contest that usually defines the race.

Jamie Cumming (People's Party) ran for the PPC, adding a populist voice to the ballot in a riding with strong blue-collar sensibilities.

About the Riding

Elmwood--Transcona has been an NDP stronghold since the riding's creation in 1988 — the party has won every election here except in 2011, when the Conservative wave briefly flipped it. The riding's predecessor, Winnipeg--Birds Hill, was also NDP-held from 1979 onward. This loyalty is rooted in the riding's working-class identity: according to the 2021 census, roughly 26% of the labour force works in trades, equipment operation, manufacturing, or utilities.

Transcona's identity remains inseparable from the railway. The CNR Transcona Shops, which opened in 1913, manufactured munitions during the First World War and built the first steam locomotive in Western Canada — CN 2747 — in 1926. For decades, the CN whistle regulated daily life in the community, calling workers to shifts and marking lunch breaks. Though rail employment has declined, Transcona retains its tight-knit, small-town-within-a-city character.

Elmwood, across the Red River, has a grittier urban texture — older housing stock, small commercial strips, and a diverse population that includes significant Filipino, Punjabi, and French-speaking communities. The riding's median individual income was $40,800 in 2020, and its demographic profile includes 50.9% Christian residents (with Catholics forming the largest single denomination at 21.8%), 4.2% Sikh, 2.2% Muslim, and 39.4% reporting no religion. The interplay of suburban Transcona and urban Elmwood gives the riding a distinctive dual character.
