Scarborough—Agincourt

Scarborough—Agincourt is a densely populated riding in the northwestern corner of Scarborough, bounded by Steeles Avenue East to the north, Highway 401 to the south, Victoria Park Avenue to the west, and Midland Avenue to the east. The riding takes in the neighbourhoods of Steeles, L'Amoreaux, Tam O'Shanter–Sullivan, and the portions of Agincourt and Milliken that fall west of Midland Avenue. The 2021 census recorded a population of approximately 124,000.

The riding holds a singular distinction in Canadian demographics: immigrants make up 67.8 percent of its population—the highest proportion of any federal electoral district in the country. Residents of Asian and Middle Eastern origin alone constitute a majority at 53 percent. Chinese Canadians represent roughly 46 percent of the riding's ethnic composition, followed by South Asian, Black, and Filipino communities. Chinese languages are the most commonly spoken mother tongues at over 41 percent, followed by English at 32.5 percent, Tamil, Tagalog, Armenian, and Arabic.

Candidates

Jean Yip (Liberal) — Born and raised in Scarborough's Agincourt neighbourhood, Yip is the daughter of Chinese immigrants. She studied at the University of Toronto and built a career in insurance and underwriting, earning the Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional designation and becoming a team leader in her field. She entered public life following the death of her husband, Arnold Chan—the riding's previous MP—who succumbed to cancer in September 2017. Yip won the December 2017 by-election with 49.4 percent of the vote.

Mark Johnson (Conservative) — Johnson was the Conservative Party of Canada candidate for Scarborough—Agincourt in the 2021 election.

Larisa Julius (NDP) — Julius was the New Democratic Party candidate for Scarborough—Agincourt in the 2021 election.

Eric Muraven (PPC) — Muraven was the People's Party of Canada candidate for Scarborough—Agincourt in the 2021 election.

About the Riding

Scarborough—Agincourt is one of the most ethnically diverse ridings in Canada, and its commercial landscape reflects this character. Chinese shopping centres, supermarkets, and restaurants line the corridors of Sheppard Avenue East and Finch Avenue East, giving the area a distinct cultural identity. Pacific Mall, one of the largest indoor Asian shopping centres in North America, sits just east of the riding boundary in Markham but draws heavily from Agincourt residents. The Tam O'Shanter Golf Course—an 18-hole, Par 72 public course—and L'Amoreaux Park, with its sports fields, community centre, and walking trails, provide recreational anchors for the community.

The riding's political character has been shaped by its immigrant communities. Language accessibility, settlement services, affordable housing, and transit connectivity are persistent concerns. Many residents commute long distances to employment centres across the Greater Toronto Area, and the riding's reliance on bus routes feeding into the Sheppard and Finch subway stations makes transit investment a priority issue. Seniors' services are also a significant concern, as the riding has a large population of older immigrants who may face language barriers in accessing healthcare and social programs.

Scarborough—Agincourt has been a Liberal seat since its creation, and the party's support among the riding's Chinese-Canadian and broader immigrant populations has been a durable feature of its electoral politics. The riding's density, its concentration of apartment towers and townhouse complexes, and its position as a gateway community for newcomers to Canada give it a distinctive character within the Scarborough landscape.
