Mississauga—Erin Mills

Mississauga—Erin Mills encompasses the western central portion of Mississauga, built largely on what was once 8,000 acres of farmland developed by the Cadillac Fairview Corporation beginning in the early 1970s as a master-planned "new town." The riding stretches from Highway 403 in the south to Britannia Road West in the north, and from the Credit River and Creditview Road in the east to Erin Mills Parkway and the city's southwestern limit in the west. The integrated residential, commercial, and light-industrial community includes neighbourhoods such as Central Erin Mills, Erindale, and portions of Creditview and the Mississauga Road corridor.

The 2021 census recorded a population of approximately 123,400. The riding is one of the most ethnically diverse in southern Ontario: roughly 30 percent of residents identify as White, 27 percent as South Asian, 11 percent as Chinese, 10 percent as Arab, 7 percent as Black, and 5 percent as Filipino. Arabic and English are the most widely spoken languages, and immigrants account for close to half the population.

Candidates

Iqra Khalid (Liberal) — Born in Pakistan, Khalid moved to England in 1993 while her father completed his PhD, and immigrated to Canada in 1998. She holds a degree in criminology and professional writing from York University and later pursued a Juris Doctor at Cooley Law School. First elected in 2015, she gained national prominence by introducing Motion M-103 in 2016, which called on the government to develop a strategy against systemic racism and religious discrimination. She was re-elected in 2019 and serves on the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics.

James Nguyen (Conservative) — A University of Toronto graduate who also holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University, Nguyen works as an insurance and investment adviser with experience in estate planning and supply chain management. He volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel and the Mississauga Food Bank, and during the pandemic raised funds to donate personal protective equipment to hospitals, retirement homes, and places of worship.

Kaukab Usman (NDP) — Usman is the NDP candidate for the riding, advocating for expanded social programs, affordable housing, and support for immigrant communities.

Michael Bayer (PPC) — Bayer is the People's Party of Canada candidate, running on the party's platform of reduced government spending and greater individual freedoms.

About the Riding

Erin Mills was one of Ontario's most ambitious planned communities. Don Mills Development Corporation announced its plans in 1969 to build the "new town" in four phases, concentrating commercial uses in the centre and industrial uses on the periphery. The result is a community of curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs, and generous green space corridors that distinguish it from the grid patterns of older Mississauga neighbourhoods. Erin Mills Town Centre, operated by Cadillac Fairview, serves as the commercial anchor.

The University of Toronto's Mississauga campus sits along Mississauga Road on the riding's eastern edge, occupying 225 acres within a protected greenbelt along the Credit River valley. The campus is a significant employer and shapes the academic and cultural character of the surrounding area. Honeywell and other technology and service-sector firms also maintain operations in the riding.

Affordable housing and transit were the most pressing local issues in 2021. The riding's large immigrant population—drawn from South Asia, the Middle East, China, and the Philippines—creates sustained demand for settlement services, language training, and credential recognition. The planned expansion of Mississauga's transit network, including connections to the Hurontario LRT and regional GO Transit services, was a key concern for commuters who depend on personal vehicles to reach employment centres across the Greater Toronto Area. The riding's relatively high median household income masks significant variation between established homeowners and newer arrivals in rental housing.
