Flamborough--Glanbrook

Flamborough--Glanbrook is a large, U-shaped federal riding that wraps around the southern, eastern, and western edges of the city of Hamilton, Ontario. Spanning approximately 1,097 square kilometres, the riding includes parts of the County of Brant — notably the communities of Paris and St. George — as well as parts of Hamilton including Waterdown, Rockton, Binbrook, and Mount Hope. It also takes in the Hamilton International Airport. The riding's geography ranges from the Niagara Escarpment to rolling farmland, and Flamborough alone contains roughly half of all farmland within the municipality of Hamilton.

The riding's population of about 104,000 residents skews toward higher household incomes, with a median of approximately $117,000. About twelve percent of residents identify as visible minorities, and the top employment sectors are manufacturing, retail trade, and health care.

Candidates

Dan Muys (Conservative) — Born and raised in Copetown within the riding, Muys graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University and spent twenty-five years as a public relations and communications consultant, primarily in the agriculture, agri-food, and energy sectors. He worked with companies including TransCanada Pipelines, Cargill, and Syngenta, and was part of teams that developed successful bids for major energy infrastructure projects. Prior to running, Muys served as Chief of Staff for the riding's previous MP, David Sweet, from 2008 to 2020. He sought the Conservative nomination after Sweet's retirement.

Vito Sgro (Liberal) — An accountant and longtime Liberal organizer, Sgro ran a high-profile campaign for mayor of Hamilton in 2018. He brought eighteen years of experience in the agriculture and agri-food sector and focused his 2021 campaign on childcare, housing affordability, rural internet connectivity, and support for agricultural workers.

Lorne Newick (NDP) — An electrician active in his union and a labour council leader, Newick brought professional experience dealing with provincial and federal government ministries on apprenticeship training, licensing, certification, and occupational health and safety for the compulsory trades.

Bill Panchyshyn (PPC) — A business administration graduate of Sheridan College, Panchyshyn had a twenty-five-year career in sales, account management, and consultation in the quick-service restaurant and packaging industries before transitioning to work as an emergency roadside dispatcher. The 2021 election was his first political campaign.

About the Riding

Flamborough--Glanbrook is a riding of contrasts — small-town Ontario coexisting with the exurban growth pressures of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Waterdown, at the riding's northern end, has experienced rapid residential development as families priced out of the GTA seek more affordable housing. The town's population has surged, straining local infrastructure and schools while transforming what was once a quiet village into a bustling commuter suburb.

Binbrook, in the riding's southeastern corner, has undergone a similar transformation, with new subdivisions expanding into former agricultural land. Mount Hope, located near the Hamilton airport, maintains a more rural character but faces development pressure as well. Further afield, communities like Carlisle, Freelton, Millgrove, and Lynden retain their agricultural identity — farms here commonly grow corn, strawberries, and other cash crops.

The riding's economy reflects this dual character. Manufacturing remains a significant employer, consistent with the broader Hamilton region's industrial heritage, while agriculture and agri-food operations thrive in the surrounding countryside. The Hamilton International Airport, located within the riding, is a growing cargo hub and economic anchor.

Flamborough--Glanbrook has historically leaned Conservative, but the 2021 contest was notably competitive. The retirement of longtime Conservative MP David Sweet — who stepped down amid controversy — opened the seat, and both the Liberals and Conservatives invested significant campaign resources. Both party leaders visited the riding in the final days of the campaign, underscoring its status as a bellwether for the broader Hamilton-area political landscape.
