Brampton West

Brampton West encompasses the western portion of the City of Brampton, stretching from Hurontario Street on the east to the Halton Hills border on the west, and from the city's southern boundary north to Bovaird Drive. The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Heart Lake, Snelgrove, and portions of Castlemore, along with newer subdivisions that have expanded westward toward Mississauga Road. Much of the area was developed from the 1990s onward, and the landscape is characterized by curving residential streets, community parks, and strip-mall plazas interspersed with remaining greenfield sites.

Brampton West shares the same demographic profile as the broader city—a majority South Asian population with significant Punjabi, Gujarati, and other diasporic communities. The riding's electorate skews younger than the Ontario average, driven by family-oriented immigration and new homeownership. Warehousing, logistics, and light manufacturing operations cluster along the Highway 410 corridor and in industrial parks to the south.

Candidates

Kamal Khera (Liberal) — Born in Delhi, India, in 1989, Khera was raised in Brampton. She graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York University and worked as a registered nurse in the palliative and oncology units at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto. Elected in 2015 at age twenty-six, she was the youngest Liberal MP in the House of Commons at the time. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic she volunteered at a long-term care facility in Brampton and administered vaccines in the community. She previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development and to the Minister of National Revenue.

Jermaine Chambers (Conservative) — A financial professional with more than thirteen years of experience at three of Canada's largest banks, Chambers operates a mortgage business helping families with home financing. He holds an undergraduate degree in business management and a mortgage agent licence. Active in the Brampton community, he is a Rotarian who has supported seniors' groups, mental health initiatives, and community development projects. He previously ran as the provincial Progressive Conservative candidate for Brampton West.

Gurprit Gill (NDP) — Gill ran as the NDP candidate in Brampton West. Limited public biographical information was available during the campaign period.

Rahul Samuel Zia (PPC) — Zia is co-owner of Orion Security, a security and healthcare staffing firm in Brampton. He holds a bachelor's degree in counselling psychology and works as a counsellor and life coach. Raised in Brampton West, he volunteers with Elder Help Peel and Big Brothers.

About the Riding

Brampton West has been a Liberal stronghold since the riding's creation under the 2003 redistribution, and the 2021 contest continued that pattern. The riding's political dynamics are shaped by the same forces at work across Brampton: rapid population growth, a young and diverse electorate, and a suite of infrastructure concerns that cross party lines.

Healthcare, transit, and housing affordability are the dominant local issues. Residents commute heavily along Highway 410 and the GO Transit network to employment centres in Mississauga and Toronto, and traffic congestion is a daily frustration. The Brampton Board of Trade has hosted candidate debates focused on economic development, workforce training, and support for small business owners—many of whom are first-generation immigrants operating in the retail and service sectors.

Community life revolves around gurdwaras, mandirs, mosques, and churches, as well as a network of cultural and sports organizations. The Heart Lake Conservation Area, operated by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, provides one of the riding's few large green spaces.
