The riding of Pontiac spans a vast stretch of western Quebec's Outaouais region, running from the suburban fringe of Gatineau northward to the borders of Abitibi and the upper Gatineau Valley. The Ottawa River forms the riding's southern boundary, while its northern reaches extend deep into the Canadian Shield and the boreal forest. Key communities include Chelsea, Cantley, La Peche, Shawville, Bristol, Mansfield-et-Pontefract, Gracefield, and the town of Maniwaki—the regional hub of the upper Gatineau. Gatineau Park, a 361-square-kilometre federal conservation area of forested hills and glacial lakes, occupies a significant portion of the riding's southern territory. The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg reserve, an Algonquin First Nations community established near Maniwaki in 1851, is a defining cultural presence in the riding. Anglophones—roughly one-fifth of the population—live predominantly along the Ottawa River corridor from Aylmer to Sheenboro and along the Gatineau River from Chelsea to Maniwaki.
Candidates
Sophie Chatel (Liberal) — A tax policy specialist and chartered professional accountant, Chatel earned a law degree from the Université de Montréal and a master's in taxation from the Université de Sherbrooke. She spent six years as a tax advisor in the private sector before joining the Canada Revenue Agency and the Department of Finance as a treaty negotiator. She later served as Head of Tax Treaties at the OECD in Paris, contributing to international tax reform including the 15% minimum tax for multinationals. An avid marathon runner and outdoorswoman, she entered politics motivated by climate change concerns and became the first woman elected to represent Pontiac.
Michel Gauthier (Conservative) — A longtime journalist in the Outaouais, Gauthier served as editor-in-chief of Le Droit, the region's major francophone daily newspaper, before entering the 2021 contest.
Gabrielle Desjardins (Bloc Québécois) — A university student at the time of the election, Desjardins carried the Bloc standard in a riding where the party had been building support.
Denise Giroux (NDP) — A union lawyer by profession, Giroux was the only returning candidate in the Pontiac riding, having previously run for the New Democrats.
Shaughn McArthur (Green) — McArthur represented the Green Party of Canada in the riding.
David Bruce Gottfred (PPC) — Gottfred carried the banner for the People's Party of Canada.
About the Riding
Pontiac is one of the largest federal ridings in southern Quebec by area, encompassing a landscape that transitions from the suburban commuter belt of the Gatineau Hills to remote logging and farming communities in the upper Ottawa and Gatineau valleys. The Eardley Escarpment—a dramatic geological formation carved by glaciers and the ancient Champlain Sea—divides the suburban south from the rural interior. Agriculture, forestry, and tourism are the economic pillars of the riding's northern reaches, while the southern communities serve largely as bedroom communities for federal public servants commuting to Ottawa and Gatineau.
The riding's bilingual character sets it apart from most Quebec constituencies. English-speaking communities along the Ottawa River trace their roots to Irish and British settlers of the nineteenth century, and the region maintains a network of anglophone schools, churches, and cultural organizations. The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, meanwhile, bring a distinct Indigenous voice to the riding's political landscape. The community's presence was formally acknowledged when the riding was renamed Pontiac—Kitigan Zibi following the 2022 redistribution.
Local concerns in Pontiac tend to centre on rural infrastructure—road maintenance, broadband internet access, and health care availability in communities far from urban hospitals. Seasonal flooding along the Ottawa River has been a recurring crisis, with major flood events displacing residents in Pontiac, Mansfield, and other riverside municipalities. The riding's environmental profile is also shaped by Gatineau Park, whose ecological management and recreational use remain matters of ongoing public interest.
