About the Riding

The riding’s most prominent institution is the Canadian Space Agency, headquartered at the John H. Chapman Space Centre on the border of Saint-Hubert Airport. The 41-hectare complex is the nerve centre of Canada’s space program and anchors a broader aerospace cluster in the Longueuil agglomeration. Pratt & Whitney Canada operates a jet engine manufacturing facility near the airport, and the surrounding industrial zones — nine parks in all — are home to 50% of the companies and 42% of the industrial jobs in the agglomeration.

Saint-Hubert Airport functions as a general aviation facility and hosts numerous aerospace and aviation-related businesses. The riding’s economy thus combines blue-collar manufacturing with high-technology research and development. Housing affordability was a growing concern heading into 2021, as the South Shore attracted an influx of families priced out of the Montreal market. During the pandemic, Trudel organized performances in front of seniors’ residences and community housing, online story readings, and food basket distributions — community engagement that reinforced his local profile heading into the campaign.
