North Okanagan—Shuswap

North Okanagan—Shuswap extends across British Columbia's southern Interior, linking the agricultural valleys of the North Okanagan with the lake country of the Shuswap region. The riding's population centres include Vernon, the commercial hub at the northern tip of Okanagan Lake, and Salmon Arm on the shores of Shuswap Lake, along with the smaller communities of Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby, Sicamous, and Coldstream. The landscape transitions from orchard-dotted benchlands and ranchland in the south to densely forested highlands and expansive lake systems in the north.

Candidates

Mel Arnold (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, Arnold grew up on a family dairy farm in Notch Hill near Shuswap Lake. He operated a small business in Salmon Arm and held leadership roles in conservation organizations, including the presidency of the BC Wildlife Federation and service on the Canadian Wildlife Federation board as governance committee chair. He also served for eight years on Salmon Arm's environmental advisory council. First elected in 2015, he served on the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.

Cindy Derkaz (Liberal) — A Salmon Arm lawyer who returned to the community after completing her law degree in 1978 and opened her own practice in the early 1980s, Derkaz was a founder and long-time president of the Shuswap Community Foundation. She received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for her community service. The 2019 contest marked her second consecutive federal campaign in the riding.

Harwinder Sandhu (NDP) — A registered nurse at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Sandhu had worked in health care for nearly two decades across northern and Interior British Columbia, including in Terrace. She was active with the BC Nurses' Union and had previously run as the provincial NDP candidate in Kelowna—Mission in 2017.

Marc Reinarz (Green Party) — A Spallumcheen resident and retired international business manager, Reinarz and his wife purchased a small farm in the area in 2004, raising Andalusian horses and selling hay to neighbouring farmers. An avid sailor, he set a personal catamaran speed record on Okanagan Lake.

Kyle Delfing also ran for the People's Party of Canada.

About the Riding

The regional economy rests on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The North Okanagan is among British Columbia's most productive farming regions, supporting dairy, cattle, tree fruits, and a growing wine and craft beverage industry. Armstrong hosts the Interior Provincial Exhibition, one of the oldest agricultural fairs in western Canada, dating to 1899. Shuswap Lake, with its extensive shoreline, draws large numbers of visitors each summer for houseboating, fishing, and camping, making tourism a significant seasonal employer in communities from Sicamous to Salmon Arm. Sawmills and wood product plants in the area anchor a forestry sector that has faced periodic downturns tied to commodity prices and timber supply. The riding experienced severe wildfire seasons in 2017 and 2018, making forest management and emergency preparedness pressing concerns heading into the 2019 campaign. Health care access, particularly physician shortages in family medicine across Vernon and Salmon Arm, was another prominent issue for voters.
