Delta

Occupying the flat peninsula where the Fraser River empties into the Strait of Georgia, the federal riding of Delta covers the entire municipality of Delta and its three distinct communities — North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen — in the southwestern corner of Metro Vancouver. Water defines the riding on three sides: the Fraser River to the north, the Strait of Georgia to the west, and Boundary Bay along the southern edge near the Canada–United States border.

Candidates

Carla Qualtrough (Liberal) — A human rights lawyer and former Paralympic swimmer who earned three bronze medals at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Paralympics, Qualtrough was the first Paralympic athlete elected to Canada's Parliament when she won the seat in 2015. She studied political science at the University of Ottawa and earned a law degree from the University of Victoria, then served as counsel to the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal and the Canadian Human Rights Commission. She also served as president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee from 2006 to 2011. She entered the 2019 race as a sitting cabinet minister.

Tanya Corbet (Conservative) — A Tsawwassen First Nation member who had served as an elected executive councillor of the TFN and worked with its government for 20 years, Corbet held key roles with the TFN treaty team and Economic Development Corporation. She was elected BC Treaty Commission Commissioner by the First Nations Summit for a one-year term beginning in 2018 and served on the board of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation.

Randy Anderson-Fennell (NDP) — A nine-year Delta resident who worked as an electrician for the Surrey School District, Anderson-Fennell served as an executive officer with CUPE Local 728. He had previously run for school trustee in the 2018 municipal election and campaigned on universal pharmacare and housing affordability.

Craig DeCraene (Green Party) — A North Delta resident and former Delta city council candidate in the 2018 civic election, DeCraene worked in the auto glass replacement industry. He campaigned on climate action, noting that low-lying areas of Tsawwassen and Ladner were particularly vulnerable to the effects of rising sea levels.

Angelina Ireland (People's Party), Amarit Bains (Independent), and Tony Bennett (Independent) also stood for election.

About the Riding

North Delta, home to more than half the municipality's population, is a largely residential suburb built above the Fraser River floodplain, adjacent to Burns Bog — one of the largest undeveloped urban bogs in North America and a critical ecological conservation area spanning roughly 40 square kilometres. Ladner, a 19th-century fishing village in the municipality's northwest, retains a heritage downtown and is surrounded by some of Metro Vancouver's most productive farmland, including the scenic farms of Westham Island.

Tsawwassen, in the southwest corner, serves as the mainland terminal for BC Ferries services to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The Roberts Bank Superport — encompassing Deltaport container terminal and Westshore Terminals coal facility — is a major piece of national trade infrastructure. The proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion was a significant local issue, raising questions about environmental impacts on the Fraser River estuary and the adjacent migratory bird habitat.

Agriculture is central to Delta's identity, with over half the municipality's land classified as agricultural and protected under the Agricultural Land Reserve. The George Massey Tunnel replacement project, agricultural land preservation, and flood protection infrastructure were prominent federal concerns in 2019.
