Calgary Nose Hill

Calgary Nose Hill spans the city's north-central suburbs, taking its name from Nose Hill Park, an 1,129-hectare natural environment park that ranks among the largest municipal parks in Canada. The riding was reconfigured through the 2012 redistribution, drawing from portions of the former Calgary-Nose Hill and Calgary Northeast districts. Its communities range from established 1980s subdivisions surrounding the park to rapidly expanding developments along Calgary's northern boundary.

Candidates

Michelle Rempel (Conservative) was born in Winnipeg in 1980 and holds an economics degree from the University of Manitoba. Before entering politics, she directed the University of Calgary's Institutional Programs Division, where she helped grow sponsored research revenue significantly. First elected in Calgary Centre-North in 2011, she was appointed Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification in 2013 and was recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2016. She sought re-election as the incumbent for Calgary Nose Hill.

Josephine Tsang (Liberal) holds a PhD in physical organic chemistry from Queen's University and worked at TELUS Spark science centre in Calgary, leading programming and partnership development in the energy transitions section. She had also taught at Mount Royal University.

Patrick King (NDP) is a Calgary-born app developer who has led teams on software projects across both the public and private sectors, including work in the oil and gas industry. Active in the technology community, he volunteers at learn-to-code events and is a year-round cycling commuter.

Jocelyn Grosse (Green Party) ran for the Greens and advocated for repurposing orphan oil and gas wells for geothermal energy as a strategy to advance clean energy in Alberta.

Also on the ballot were Kelly Lorencz (People's Party) and Peggy Askin (Marxist-Leninist).

About the Riding

Nose Hill Park sits at the geographic centre of the riding, preserving one of the most significant remaining tracts of native rough-fescue grassland on the Canadian prairies. The park supports dozens of native plant species and provides panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Bow River valley below. Surrounding the park, communities like Panorama Hills, Coventry Hills, Harvest Hills, and Country Hills form a band of residential subdivisions developed from the 1980s onward, with newer communities such as Nolan Hill, Sage Hill, and Evanston absorbing rapid population growth along the city's northern edge.

Panorama Hills, the riding's largest community, experienced substantial population growth through the 2010s and is home to a significant South Asian population. Punjabi is the second most commonly spoken mother tongue in several of the riding's northern subdivisions. The area is connected to downtown by the CTrain Red Line and served by Country Hills Town Centre and Beddington Towne Centre. Many residents commute to downtown offices or to business parks along the Deerfoot Trail corridor. Transit expansion to the northern communities and the economic impacts of Alberta's energy-sector slowdown were persistent local concerns heading into the 2019 election.
