Winnipeg South

Winnipeg South encompasses the southern suburbs of Manitoba's capital, taking in the established neighbourhoods of Fort Garry, Fort Richmond, and Whyte Ridge, the newer Waverley West developments including Bridgwater, and the historic community of St. Norbert where the Red and La Salle rivers meet. The University of Manitoba's Fort Garry campus, the province's largest post-secondary institution, sits near the riding's centre.

Candidates

Terry Duguid (Liberal) — An environmental scientist by training, Duguid served on Winnipeg City Council from 1989 to 1995, where he helped establish the city's blue-box recycling program. He later chaired the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission and was founding president of the International Centre for Infectious Diseases from 2004 to 2009. First elected to the House of Commons in 2015 on his fourth attempt at a federal seat, he sought re-election in 2019.

Melanie Maher (Conservative) — Maher ran a competitive campaign against the Liberal incumbent in what proved to be one of Manitoba's tighter races of the evening.

Jean-Paul Lapointe (NDP) — Lapointe carried the NDP banner in a riding where the party has historically placed third behind the Liberals and Conservatives.

Paul Bettess (Green Party) and Mirwais Nasiri (People's Party) also sought election in the riding.

About the Riding

The University of Manitoba is the riding's economic and cultural anchor, employing thousands of faculty and staff and drawing students from across the province and internationally. Fort Richmond, immediately south of campus, is popular with students, young families, and university employees. Whyte Ridge is one of Winnipeg's more affluent subdivisions, with man-made lakes at its centre. The riding experienced rapid growth in the years before 2019, driven by the Waverley West development, one of the largest residential subdivisions in Winnipeg's history. Pembina Highway serves as the principal commercial corridor. St. Norbert, at the riding's southern edge, retains a francophone character and hosts a popular farmers' market. Winnipeg South has earned a reputation as a political bellwether, with a pattern of electing a member from the party that forms government nationally. Investors Group Field, which opened in 2013 as home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, is located in the riding adjacent to the university campus. Key issues in 2019 included post-secondary research funding, transit expansion along the Southwest Transitway corridor, infrastructure for rapidly growing suburban communities, environmental stewardship of the Red and La Salle river corridors, and flood mitigation planning.
