About the Riding
Markham—Thornhill sits at the heart of one of Canada's most prominent technology corridors. The City of Markham is home to over 1,500 technology and life sciences companies, and the Highway 7 strip that runs through the riding functions as a major employment zone for software development, IT services, and corporate offices. IBM Canada's national headquarters and AMD are among the most prominent employers in the broader Markham area.
The riding's commercial landscape includes numerous Chinese and East Asian-oriented shopping centres, restaurants, and cultural institutions, reflecting a population where Chinese Canadians form the largest ethnic group. The Thornhill portion of the riding, an older residential community, provides a counterpoint to the newer condominium and townhouse developments in Markham's western districts.
Transit connectivity was a significant concern in 2019, as residents relied heavily on Highway 404 for commuting to Toronto. International trade and small business support were locally relevant given the incumbent's cabinet portfolio, while immigration policy and family reunification resonated strongly with the riding's large newcomer communities.
