Don Valley East

Don Valley East occupies a section of northeastern Toronto that runs southward from Highway 401 through the neighbourhoods of Parkwoods, Don Mills, Flemingdon Park, Thorncliffe Park, and Victoria Village. The riding traces the course of the Don River along its eastern boundary, and its residential landscape is defined by a striking mix of midcentury high-rise rental towers and low-density suburban streets. Redrawn in 2012, the riding absorbed parts of several former constituencies and became one of the most densely populated districts in the city.

Candidates

Yasmin Ratansi (Liberal) -- A certified general accountant who was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and immigrated to Canada in 1974, Ratansi had represented Don Valley East from 2004 to 2011 before losing her seat in the Conservative wave of that year. She recaptured the riding in 2015 and entered the 2019 campaign as the incumbent, having chaired the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates.

Michael Ma (Conservative) -- Born in Hong Kong, Ma came to Canada at age twelve and settled in British Columbia, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in computer science at the University of British Columbia. He later earned an MBA from the University of South Australia and built a career in the technology sector before seeking the Conservative nomination in Don Valley East.

Nicholas Thompson (NDP) -- A human rights advocate and executive leader, Thompson served as president and CEO of the Black Class Action Secretariat, a litigation and advocacy organization focused on systemic discrimination in employment. He was formally nominated as the NDP candidate in May 2019.

Dan Turcotte (Green Party) -- Turcotte carried the Green Party banner in Don Valley East.

John P. Hendry (People's Party) -- Hendry ran under the People's Party of Canada banner in the riding.

About the Riding

Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park, both developed in the 1950s and 1960s as high-density rental apartment communities, serve as major settlement areas for newcomers to Canada. A substantial majority of residents speak a first language other than English or French. Median household incomes in these communities sit well below the Toronto average, and rental housing dominates -- a large majority of households are renters.

By contrast, Don Mills and Parkwoods include more established suburban enclaves with higher homeownership rates and household incomes. The Shops at Don Mills, a mixed-use retail centre, anchors the commercial life of the western portion of the riding. Don Mills Road serves as the main commercial corridor, lined with small businesses, restaurants, and professional offices reflecting the riding's multilingual character.

Transit access was a persistent concern for residents in 2019. Much of the riding relied on bus service to connect to the Sheppard subway line or the Yonge-University line, and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, under construction along the riding's southern edge, promised future improvements. Affordable housing, immigrant settlement services, and childcare costs were among the issues that shaped the local campaign.
