Brampton West

Brampton West encompasses the northwestern portion of the City of Brampton, stretching west of McLaughlin Road and north of Queen Street into newer residential developments that have expanded rapidly since the early 2000s. Located within the Region of Peel, the riding sits at the suburban fringe of the Greater Toronto Area, where planned communities continue to push outward into what was recently agricultural land.

Candidates

Kamal Khera (Liberal) — A registered nurse who had worked in palliative care and oncology at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto, Khera also gained experience at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the William Osler Health System. She was nominated as the Liberal candidate in December 2014 and, at the time of the election, was among the youngest candidates running for the party.

Ninder Thind (Conservative) — An educator who had served as a teacher and principal at a private school in Brampton, Thind took a leave of absence from her position to campaign. She had studied early childhood education and had worked with the Region of Peel's Family Health Department, and was active in community organizations including the Canadian Cancer Society and Scouts Canada.

Adaoma Patterson (NDP) — A community advocate who had worked as a poverty advisor for the Region of Peel, Patterson was endorsed by the Peel Labour Council and brought a focus on social services and affordability to her campaign.

Karthika Gobinath (Green Party) — The Green Party's candidate in Brampton West, Gobinath provided an environmentally centred option on the ballot.

About the Riding

Brampton West is one of the fastest-growing constituencies in Ontario. Streets of detached homes and townhouse complexes fan out from major arterials, and the riding has one of the highest average numbers of children per household in the province. The population is extraordinarily diverse — Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, and Gujarati are widely spoken alongside English, and communities with roots in Jamaica, the Philippines, and Portugal also have significant presences. Many residents work in the transportation and warehousing sectors that cluster around nearby Toronto Pearson International Airport, while others commute to jobs across the GTA. Local concerns heading into 2015 included stretched healthcare services, overcrowded schools, and the need for improved public transit connections to employment centres beyond Brampton.
