Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie

Occupying a densely populated swath of central-eastern Montreal, Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie is one of the city's most vibrant and diverse boroughs. The riding takes in neighbourhoods including Rosemont, La Petite-Patrie, Little Italy, and the Angus Technopole redevelopment, bounded roughly by Saint-Leonard to the northeast, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal to the southwest, and Outremont to the west. With a population exceeding 140,000, it ranks among Montreal's most populous ridings.

The NDP's Alexandre Boulerice captured the seat decisively in 2011 with over 50 percent of the vote, unseating a longtime Bloc Quebecois incumbent. By 2015, amid the NDP's declining fortunes elsewhere in Quebec, Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie stood as one of the party's safest holds in the province—a test of whether any NDP incumbent could survive the Liberal tide.

Candidates

Alexandre Boulerice (NDP) — The incumbent since 2011, Boulerice studied sociology at the Universite de Montreal and pursued graduate work in political science at McGill University. Before entering politics he worked as a communications consultant for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in Quebec. In Parliament he served as NDP critic for the Treasury Board and later as Labour critic, and was a prominent voice on labour and democratic reform issues.

Claude Andre (Bloc Quebecois) — A political science teacher at College de Rosemont and former journalist, Andre sought to rebuild the Bloc's presence in a riding the party had held for nearly two decades before 2011.

Nadine Medawar (Liberal) — Medawar brought an arts-and-culture profile to the Liberal campaign in the riding.

Jeremy Dohan (Conservative) — Dohan represented the Conservative Party in this strongly left-leaning urban riding.

Sameer Muldeen (Green Party) — Muldeen ran for the Green Party.

About the Riding

Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie blends residential streets with commercial corridors, public markets, and pockets of light industry. The Jean-Talon Market, one of Montreal's oldest and largest open-air markets, anchors the Little Italy neighbourhood. The Angus Technopole, a mixed-use redevelopment on the site of the former Canadian Pacific Railway Angus Shops, brought new housing and office space to the eastern portion of the riding. The borough's population includes established Italian, Vietnamese, and Latin American communities alongside a growing cohort of young professionals drawn by relatively affordable rents and cycling infrastructure. In 2015, local federal issues included affordable housing, public transit investment—particularly the proposed extension of the metro's blue line—and support for the cultural sector that sustains many residents' livelihoods.
