Located in Montreal's north end along the banks of the Rivière des Prairies, Ahuntsic-Cartierville is an urban riding that encompasses the borough of the same name. Its neighbourhoods—Ahuntsic, Cartierville, Nouveau-Bordeaux, and others—blend heritage homes, postwar bungalows, and newer condominium developments. The riding is one of Montreal's most ethnically diverse, with significant communities of North African, Haitian, Lebanese, and South Asian origin alongside long-established francophone populations.
Candidates
Mélanie Joly (Liberal) — A lawyer by training, Joly studied at the Université de Montréal and earned a Magister Juris at Oxford's Brasenose College. She practised civil and commercial litigation at major Montreal firms Stikeman Elliott and Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg before moving into public relations. In 2013, she mounted a high-profile run for mayor of Montreal, founding the Vrai changement pour Montréal party and finishing second behind Denis Coderre. She won the Liberal nomination in Ahuntsic-Cartierville in a contested race that went to a third ballot.
Maria Mourani (NDP) — A criminologist and author who had represented the former Ahuntsic riding for the Bloc Québécois since 2006, Mourani was expelled from the Bloc caucus in September 2013 after opposing Quebec's proposed Charter of Values. She subsequently renounced sovereigntism in December 2013, sat as an independent for the remainder of the 41st Parliament, and joined the NDP in November 2014 to run under their banner in the redrawn riding.
Nicolas Bourdon (Bloc Québécois) — A French teacher at Cégep Bois-de-Boulogne, Bourdon campaigned on environmental issues, particularly opposition to the Energy East pipeline, and on engaging younger voters in the sovereigntist movement.
Wiliam Moughrabi (Conservative) — Moughrabi worked as a furniture store manager. His campaign was overshadowed in August 2015 when he deleted social media accounts following the exposure of inappropriate posts, though the party did not remove him as a candidate.
About the Riding
Ahuntsic-Cartierville sits at the northern tip of the Island of Montreal, bordered by the Rivière des Prairies. The neighbourhood of Cartierville developed around the former Canadair aircraft plant, which later became part of Bombardier Aerospace and remained a major local employer. The riding is served by several Metro stations and the Sainte-Dorothée commuter rail line. Collège Ahuntsic and Cégep Bois-de-Boulogne are prominent post-secondary institutions in the area. As a riding created through the 2012 redistribution, the 2015 election was its first federal contest, though it inherited the political legacy of the old Ahuntsic riding. Immigration services, affordable housing, and public transit improvements were key concerns for residents heading into election day.
