Candidates
Robert Anders (Conservative) — Anders had represented Calgary West since 1997, when he won the seat vacated by Stephen Harper's departure from the House of Commons. Born in 1972, he was elected at age twenty-five as a Reform Party MP and became one of the youngest members of Parliament at the time. Anders was a staunch social conservative known for controversial positions, including his opposition to granting honorary Canadian citizenship to Nelson Mandela, whom he described as a communist and a terrorist. He faced persistent internal party dissent, with nineteen members of his riding association resigning en masse in 2010 over party interference in local nomination processes. He was later defeated in a Conservative nomination contest ahead of the 2015 election.
Janice Kinch (Liberal) — Kinch was a nursing professor who ran as the Liberal candidate in Calgary West in the 2011 election. She campaigned on health care and education issues but faced long odds in one of Calgary's most reliably Conservative constituencies.
Shawna Knowles (NDP) — Knowles ran as the NDP candidate in Calgary West. She lived in Edmonton rather than Calgary, which drew criticism from Anders, who noted he had not seen her during door-knocking and had observed only a handful of her campaign signs in the riding.
Anna Lisa Wagner (Green Party) — Wagner carried the Green Party banner in Calgary West in 2011, running on the party's platform of environmental sustainability and democratic reform.
Andre Vachon (Marxist-Leninist) — Vachon ran as the Marxist-Leninist Party candidate in Calgary West.
About the Riding
Calgary West was a solidly Conservative riding that had been held by right-of-centre MPs continuously since its re-creation in 1976. The constituency sat on the city's western edge, bounded by the Bow River to the north and stretching toward the growing communities along Stoney Trail. The riding's western neighbourhoods, including Aspen Woods and Springbank Hill, were among Calgary's most upscale developments, featuring large estate homes and attracting professionals and executives from the energy industry. The eastern half of the riding contained more established communities like Glamorgan and Glenbrook, built in the 1960s and 1970s, with smaller bungalows and a more diverse socioeconomic profile.
The local economy was heavily tied to Calgary's role as the headquarters of Canada's oil and gas industry. Many residents worked in the energy sector, either in downtown office towers or in engineering, consulting, and services firms scattered throughout the city. The riding also benefited from its proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway and commercial centres along 17th Avenue and at the Westhills Towne Centre, which provided significant retail employment. Signal Hill Centre and surrounding commercial areas served as the primary shopping destinations for the riding's residents.
Despite his controversial reputation, Anders consistently won Calgary West by wide margins, benefiting from the deep-blue political culture of western Calgary. In 2011, he was re-elected comfortably, though his share of the vote was somewhat lower than other Calgary-area Conservatives due to the internal divisions within his own riding association. The NDP's national surge under Jack Layton had little impact in Calgary's suburban west side, and the Liberal collapse under Ignatieff further cemented the Conservative dominance.
Calgary West was abolished in the 2012 redistribution, with its territory divided among the new ridings of Calgary Signal Hill, Calgary Rocky Ridge, and Calgary Confederation. Anders attempted to secure nominations in other Calgary ridings but was twice defeated by rival Conservative candidates, ending his parliamentary career before the 2015 election.
