Candidates
Andrew Cash (NDP) — Cash was a Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter and journalist who had deep roots in the Toronto music scene. He co-founded the Toronto punk band L'Etranger with Charlie Angus in the early 1980s, then signed to Island Records as a solo artist, releasing his debut album Time and Place in 1988 and the follow-up Boomtown in 1989. He later performed as one half of the Cash Brothers with his sibling Peter. Beyond music, Cash wrote regularly on politics for Now Magazine. He ran as the NDP candidate in Davenport in 2011, the first serious challenge to decades of Liberal dominance in the riding.
Mario Silva (Liberal) — Silva was the incumbent MP, first elected in Davenport in 2004 after serving as a Toronto city councillor since 1994. Born in the Azores, Portugal, he held a PhD in international law from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Silva had replaced longtime Liberal MP Charles Caccia as the party's candidate in the riding ahead of the 2004 election.

About the Riding
Davenport is a densely populated urban riding defined by its strong working-class and immigrant heritage. The Portuguese community, centred along Dundas Street West and College Street, has been the riding's cultural backbone for decades, with Davenport having the highest percentage of Portuguese-origin residents of any federal riding in Canada at roughly 27 percent. Italian Canadians also form a significant community, particularly in the northern sections near St. Clair Avenue West and the Corso Italia commercial strip. By 2011, the riding was experiencing demographic change as younger professionals moved into the area, drawn by relatively affordable housing, vibrant cultural amenities, and proximity to downtown. The local economy was anchored by small businesses, restaurants, bakeries, and trades, with Dufferin Mall serving as a commercial hub. Manufacturing had historically been important in the Junction Triangle area, though many former industrial sites were being redeveloped. The Bloor-Danforth and St. Clair streetcar lines provided transit connections. Local issues included affordable housing pressures, the impact of gentrification on longstanding immigrant communities, and transit improvements.
