About the Riding
Bramalea—Gore—Malton recorded one of the fastest population growth rates in Ontario between 2006 and 2011, at 25.8 percent. The median age of 34.4 years made it the third-youngest riding in the province, and average household size of 3.5 persons ranked among the highest. About 42 percent of residents reported East Indian ethnic origin, the highest such proportion of any federal riding in Canada, and over a quarter of the population were immigrants from Southern Asia.
The riding's economy is closely tied to Pearson Airport and the surrounding industrial and logistics parks. Malton's transformation from an agricultural community began in 1937 when it was chosen as the site for what became Pearson Airport and a hub for aircraft manufacturing. By 2011, warehousing, freight logistics, air transport services, and manufacturing remained the dominant employment sectors. The Bramalea City Centre mall and surrounding retail corridors serve as commercial anchors on the Brampton side. Major transportation links include Highways 427 and 410, as well as the Bramalea GO Transit station, which connects commuters to downtown Toronto. Local issues heading into 2011 included transit investment, immigration settlement services, and infrastructure to keep pace with the riding's rapid suburban growth.
