About the Riding
Verchères—Les Patriotes stretches along the south shore of the St. Lawrence from eastern Boucherville through to Contrecoeur, with the agricultural hinterland extending inland. The riding’s name honours the Patriotes, participants in the 1837-38 rebellions against British colonial rule, a movement with deep roots in this part of the Richelieu Valley.
Sainte-Julie is the riding’s most populous community, a fast-growing suburban city that attracts young families with its residential developments and proximity to Montreal via Autoroute 20. Varennes, on the riverfront, blends older village character with modern industrial development, including a petrochemical corridor and pharmaceutical operations. Contrecoeur is home to heavy industry, notably ArcelorMittal’s steelmaking operations, which employ hundreds of workers at facilities along the St. Lawrence.
Approximately 80 percent of the riding’s territory falls within protected agricultural zones, though the majority of the population is concentrated in the urban centres along the riverfront and Autoroute 20 corridor. The local economy mixes heavy industry in Contrecoeur and Varennes with the agricultural sector, including dairy farming, market gardening, and specialty crops. Many residents commute to Montreal or Longueuil for work.
The riding consistently ranked among the highest in Canada for voter turnout. Heading into 2011, local concerns included the environmental impact of industrial activity along the St. Lawrence, transportation links to Montreal, and managing suburban growth while preserving the region’s agricultural heritage.
