Halifax

The riding of Halifax encompasses the Halifax Peninsula — the historic urban core of Nova Scotia's capital — along with communities extending south and west including Spryfield, Herring Cove, Sambro, Harrietsfield, Prospect, Purcell's Cove, and Armdale. The peninsula is home to downtown Halifax, the city's business district, the waterfront, and several major post-secondary institutions. It is the most densely urban of Nova Scotia's federal ridings.

Candidates

Megan Leslie (NDP) — The incumbent MP, first elected in 2008 after succeeding former NDP leader Alexa McDonough in the riding. Originally from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Leslie held a Bachelor of Arts in Social and Political Thought from York University, a Certificate in Refugee and Migration Studies, and a law degree from Dalhousie University. Before entering politics, she worked at the Dalhousie Legal Aid Service, running mobile legal information clinics in Halifax and advocating for affordable energy rates on behalf of low-income residents. She was a founding member of the Affordable Energy Coalition and served as the NDP's health critic in Ottawa.

Stan Kutcher (Liberal) — A psychiatrist and professor at Dalhousie University, where he served as head of the Department of Psychiatry and held the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health. Kutcher was internationally recognized for his research and advocacy in youth mental health and brought significant academic credentials to the race as the Liberal challenger.

George Nikolaou (Conservative) — Nikolaou carried the Conservative banner in Halifax, a riding where the party typically ran well behind the NDP and Liberals.

Michael Dewar (Green Party) — Dewar represented the Green Party in the riding.

Tony Seed ran for the Marxist-Leninist Party.

About the Riding

Halifax is the institutional and economic heart of Atlantic Canada. The riding is home to Dalhousie University, Saint Mary's University, the University of King's College, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and the Halifax campus of Mount Saint Vincent University, making post-secondary education one of the largest employment sectors. The substantial student population gives the riding a younger demographic profile than most Atlantic Canadian constituencies.

The Department of National Defence is the single largest employer in the Halifax region, with Canadian Forces Base Halifax and the naval dockyard at HMC Dockyard anchoring the military presence. The Port of Halifax, one of Canada's major container terminals, supports a significant logistics and shipping industry. The downtown core houses provincial government offices, financial services firms, and a growing technology sector.

The communities south of the peninsula — Spryfield, Herring Cove, and Sambro — have a more working-class and fishing-village character, distinct from the urban core. The riding's combination of students, professionals, military and government workers, and working-class communities created a diverse electorate. Halifax had trended NDP in recent elections, and Leslie's strong first-term performance as a constituency MP reinforced the party's hold on the seat heading into 2011.
