Cloverdale—Langley City

Cloverdale—Langley City is a federal electoral district in British Columbia's Lower Mainland, spanning parts of Surrey and the Township and City of Langley. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Liberal MP John Aldag, who stepped down effective May 31, 2024, to seek the BC NDP nomination in the provincial riding of Langley-Abbotsford ahead of the October 2024 British Columbia general election.

Candidates

Tamara Jansen (Conservative) — A businesswoman who runs Darvonda Nurseries in Langley alongside her husband, growing it into a major greenhouse operation. Born and raised in Cloverdale, Jansen previously served as the Member of Parliament for this riding from 2019 to 2021, when she defeated John Aldag before losing the rematch in the 2021 general election.

Madison Fleischer (Liberal) — A small business owner who operates a public relations firm in Langley. Fleischer is a graduate of Trinity Western University, where she studied political studies and media and communications. She was previously recognized as one of Surrey's Top 25 Under 25 for her Slava Sweatshirts campaign that raised funds for Ukrainian relief efforts.

Vanessa Sharma (NDP) — A labour advocate who serves as Equity Vice President at the Canadian Labour Congress representing the Workers of Colour working group. Sharma works at FortisBC in community engagement and has a background in mental health advocacy, receiving MoveUP's Peter Corren Award in 2021 for her work in that area.

Patrick McCutcheon (Green Party) — A retired professional engineer and Cloverdale resident who also ran for the BC Greens in the provincial riding of Surrey-Cloverdale in the 2024 British Columbia general election.

Ian Kennedy (People's Party) and Alex Joehl (Libertarian) also appeared on the ballot.

About the Riding

Cloverdale—Langley City encompasses all of the City of Langley, most of the Cloverdale and Sullivan neighbourhoods of Surrey, and a portion of Langley Township, including the communities of Clayton and Willowbrook. The riding had a population of approximately 117,050 according to the 2021 census.

The district blends suburban residential growth with agricultural heritage. Cloverdale, established in the 1870s as a farming settlement, retains a historic town centre that has become a frequent filming location for major television and film productions, earning it a local reputation within British Columbia's broader screen industry. The area continues to host the annual Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair at its historic fairgrounds.

Langley City, a compact municipality of roughly 29,000 residents surrounded by the larger Township of Langley, serves as a commercial and light-industrial hub with over 2.5 million square feet of industrial space supporting manufacturing in plastics, metal fabrication, and warehousing. Major institutional employers in and around the riding include Kwantlen Polytechnic University, which operates a campus in the area, Fraser Health, and Surrey School District No. 36. The Clayton Heights area in the riding's northern section has experienced rapid suburban residential development. English is the predominant language, with Punjabi as the second most-spoken language at approximately 11 percent of the population.
