George Smitherman dismisses federal Liberals on claims of Tory infrastructure skew

A little birdie told me that George Smitherman, Ontario’s infrastructure minister, just dismissed federal Liberal claims that infrastructure dollars are disproportionately going to Tory ridings in Ontario. He told reporters, “you can slice and dice the numbers any way you want” and he went on to emphasize that the programs are balanced.

UDPATE: Here’s the video from Citytv.

Citytv:

“The [federal Liberals] draw conclusions based on the analysis that they’ve done,” deputy premier George Smitherman countered Thursday outside Queen’s Park.

But, he continued, they only looked at the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (Rinc) program. While that would indicate that Conservative ridings received more cash than Liberal holdings, it doesn’t tell the whole story.

The Rinc program was open to not-for-profits and municipalities, he explained.

“So the fact that there are 450 municipalities, many of them small, meant that there were more requests in the mix for smaller communities.

“I think that’s why you see it’s a little more distributed towards rural Ontario and by coincidence, that happens to be where Conservatives represent the ridings.”

Toronto scored big when other initiatives were considered, Smitherman argued.

“The knowledge infrastructure program, which is for post-secondary education, you’ll see that Toronto actually comes out with a higher degree of investment than its proportion of population…I’m pretty confident that there’s going to be a very equitable regional distribution once we’ve completed the allocation of all those dollars.”

Good on Smitherman for telling the truth. George must be glad that Kennedy's Iffy's problem now.

Smitherman was rather generous. He could have thrown the federal Liberal loud mouths and their media wonks under the bus but he didn't.

How many times was he asked? Man, are they lucky!

“The more you know”,the more you realize the desperation tactics of the Liberals in all of this.

I wonder how WK will spin this since he was part of Dalton McGuinty's campaign team. Somebody has to take the fall for the allegedly disproportionate spending of stimulus money, according to the federal Liberals. They'd obviously prefer it to be the CPC alone but it would seem that David McGuinty just might have to fall on his federal party's sword. How much longer can this false scandal be dragged out once this revelation hits the news?

It is amazing how the Liberal party of Canada misinforms Canadians when it comes to Stimulus program in Ontario. I'm not sure but I think it has something to do with recent polls. They are in a panic mood right now.

    Well done, Stephen, comme toujours!

    'Just cross-posted at SDA:

First of all, I read the TorStar today because I was in a school where this ra … paper is free in the staffroom. This holds true for all of the schools in this particular school board.

I thought on reading this article with the headline “Tories Get More Money and Projects,” NON-STORY.

Here're the goods from the TorStar article with a photo of “poor” Liberal Bonnie Crombie:

“Winners” (of all the loot from the CPC):

Three CPCers: MPs Greg Rickford, Peter Baird, and Jeff Watson

Two Liberal$: MPs David McGuinty (hmmmm), Paul Szabo

    “Losers”:

Two Liberal$: MPs Bonnie Crombie, Borys Wrzesnewsky

THREE CPCers: MPs Stephen Woodworth, Ed Holder, Peter Kent

Of course, there were in-between MPs, but GIVE ME A BREAK: Three losers are Conservative MPs.

This media-generated “story” is just crap, typical, lib-left fabricated twaddle. 'Glad that Stephen Taylor is onto it.

Not a good day for liberals and the media. This story and then iffy's lies about Arar.

  • Liz J

Something else of note, John Ibittson (sp) on Power Play said they came up with the same findings as the Liberals. Co-inka-dink no doubt, no collusion.

What is it about the stimulous money going out across the country to projects as applied for by the provinces the Liberals are so damned worried about? They were yelling to get it out, more, more and faster, faster! Could it be they can't bear to see the Conservatives handing it out and getting too much credit for it? That's about what this childish behaviour seems to be stemming from. It's very silly politics.

Let me see, Ignatieff has recently blamed Chretien for the torture of a Canadian citizen, Iggy and Kennedy have put Ontario's Deputy Premier in bed with Jim Prentice. I bet Iggy gets crossed off a few Christmas lists this year.

    Smitherton is right

Downtown urban riding by there nature have fewer hockey rinks.

Hockey in rural Canada is huge. Every town has an arena.

Hockey rinks in urban areas in lower demand per capita.

15 years ago, Scarborough Hockey association had 10,000 kids
Now it has 2,800. They are about to die from lack of demand.

George Smitherman just got himself elected mayor of Toronto. This makes it clear Tory isnt running.

Goodness, I guess the Warren will be sitting that election out. And The Warren hasnt said a phrase of retribution toward Smitherman…..either he can’t or won’t.

Smitherman’s comments likely took most of the air out of the debate.

Ontario backs Tories on stimulus distribution
    David Akin, Canwest News Service

'Provinces and municipalities are largely charged with deciding which infrastructure projects ought to get federal funding. Provinces and municipalities are also, in most cases, matching federal contributions with their own'.

In case you hadn’t noticed Dalton is spending money like Harpo and basically has that as cover. HST will drive higher revenues and at the appropriate time he will blackmail Harpo into more transfer funding becasue Harpo desperately needs Ontario votes.

We’ll then see how that lays out since WK will be there to help his side out. It will be interesting as he knows how to play the reformatories off like a fiddle and they will soon be fending off their own scandals and poor governance.

No they are not;they now have harpo’s poor management to paly with and an attack model is developing. It will be fun to see Harpo lose his cool as he gets fully exposed.

None of you die hard fans will even see this coming.

Since the media, keeps harping on the falsehood of uneven distribution, it does not matter what Smitherman says. Just watch Tom Clark. I had the feeling he wants to become a Liberal Senator .
The only consolation I have is that he has to wait a long time.

  • Omanator

Smithermann wants to be Mayor in To. Watkins wants to be Mayor in Ottawa. Why do I have the feeling the rats leaving the sinking ship. Are they thinking it would be better to have a job in City Hall than loose their seat at Queens Park?

  • Liz J

Jimmy Watson was once Mayor of Ottawa, once a Conservative too. He's definitely acting like he wants the Mayor of Ottawa job again, he hasn't admitted it but he's not fooling anyone. He's really having plenty to say about the affairs of the city.

For both him and Smitherman it's definitely leaving a sinking ship scenario. I'm thinking Watson may have run out his chances, too smooth by half. Smitherman chances in TO may be better. If it were anywhere but Toronto given his performance on the e-Health file and the fact Caplan took the fall for it he'd have less chance, especially if even John Tory were to run.

  • Liz J

Agree Tom Clark hasn't been hiding his bias too well. Judging by the latest polling numbers, with the Conservatives holding firm, in spite of all the attempts by the Opposition and their pals in the MSM to tar them with pseudo scandals, just isn't working. In fact according to Ipsos-Reid Iggy would fare worse than Dion if an election were held now.
