Conservative Party ad: “Michael Ignatieff: Just Visiting”

Within the last few minutes, the Conservative Party of Canada finally rolled out an ad defining a message track about Michael Ignatieff. Take a look:

The main message from the Tories here is that Michael Ignatieff has been out of the country and is only back in the country for his own ambition. The “Just Visiting” line is a good one because it will ring true to many Canadians and their perceived sense of commitment to country. In fact, Michael Ignatieff has already tried to pre-emptively blunt this form of attack by writing a book titled True Patriot Love wherein he outlines his mother’s family’s commitment to this country.

Narrator: Why is Michael Ignatieff back in Canada after being away for 34 years? Does he have a plan for the economy? No, instead he’s running attack ads hiding the fact that he hasn’t offered any economic ideas… just attack ads. With no long term plan for the economy, he’s not in it for Canada… just in it for himself. It’s the only reason he’s back. Michael Ignatieff: Just Visiting.

It’s interesting to note that the Conservative Party has framed “Grit Girl” Youtube vidoes as Liberal attack ads. Most observers note that the professionally produced though anonymously released ads are most likely being churned out by the Liberal Research Bureau or by Liberal HQ. Usually the videos first see wide distribution on the blog of Ignatieff’s war room captain Warren Kinsella.

The image is strong and cynical. It show an image of the Liberal leader simply drifting by and transitory. The Conservatives are also accusing the Liberals of running attack ads. The ad touches upon the #1 issue in the economy successfully underscores Igntieff’s main negative. Some observers will remember that Ignatieff once mused that if he didn’t ascend to the Prime Minister’s Office that Harvard would likely take him back.

LOL, PM Harper is not the one being dragged over the coals for accepting cash from an arms dealer and stuffing $1000 bills into his home safe.

Mulroney up there with his 'stories' just reminds me how nice it is,
to finally not have a corrupt government in charge of our country.

  • terry1

Wilson, you mean the fact that no current Tory has been caught yet……….its coming. these guys are ethically bankrupt.

  • Bec

Brian Mulroney's comments, being used in Liberal attack ads? Surely you jest.
However I suppose with MI's, only Canadian political exposure pre 2005, as Trudeau's, 'flyer force'/ errand boy, conservatives could indeed muster up a bit of mischief too.

Btw, Mulroney paid some compliments too but that would involve watching the entire thing and not believing all of the BS'er from the media.
He referenced PMSH calling the entire spectacle a 'kangaroo court'.

  • terry1

I love the way everyone assumes the grit girl ads were Liberal financed…..another embarrassment coming your way Tory lovers. The bloggers on other sites are paying attention to the picture of Harper in the ad with the caption “tory times are tough times”……that will get a lot of play in the liberal press.

  • Scott

The message is loud and clear: the man is an opportunist. To live abroad as an expatriate Canadian for 34 years stretches the bounds of merely gaining international experience. This looks more like someone who left the country for a new and better life elsewhere, but kept the door open to come back when a better offer comes along.

I'm just trying to figure out why Gerry Nichols is listed as a Blogging Tory since he is clearly not a Tory…

    http://gerrynicholls.blogspot.com/2009/05/tory-

And doesn't even list Blogging Tories as a link in his links section let along display the blog roll. His blog is a lame self promotion tool that when not used for self promotion is used to bash the CPC.

  • http://www.bloggingtories.ca ferrethouse

He ONLY gets hits from the Blogging Tories but makes no reciprical link nor is he a Tory by any stretch of the imagination. He is Garth-Lite.

  • Brett

Sooo Terry, you are bascally admitting what nearly every BT has posted for the past 3 years, that the MSM is “Liberal” media. Thanks for confirming what every one knew anyway. Oh and now that is is out there…have a nice time trying to prove that the grit girl ad was not financed by the LPOC war room. That is pretty much all they can afford anyway.

  • Bruce

“the liberal press”……………… got to love it when Liberals out there own with such abandon, just like Iggy did to Ruby when he told Macleans that she'd never treat those ladies that way who were in her employ.

I guess Bob Rae will be facing a handful of adversaries at the next Lieberal leadership convention after Iggy is backstabbed then tossed under the bus and sent packing back to Haaaaarvaaaard.

“Some observers will remember that Ignatieff once mused that if he didn’t ascend to the Prime Minister’s Office that Harvard would likely take him back.”

I think this ad would have made MUCH more of an impact had that been included.

(Psst, typo in your Grit Girl link – “vidoes.”)

  • http://www.brianjones.ca joshaidan

Attack ads are bad for our democracy. All they do is make Canadians upset so that they decide not to show up to the polls on election day.

  • http://www.brianjones.ca joshaidan

I would be committed enough to come back and serve my country in whatever way I could.

  • Blame Crash

So Gerry Turner has proclaimed this ad as “really lame”

Lets review the facts, shall we.

    1. Because the ad briefly mentions the Libs attack ads, somehow in Garth’s world, this translates into what these ads are all about. That could only be true if you stuck your fingers in your ears and started screaming “I’m not listening!!”

    2. Because the liberals say that “Tory Times are Tough Times”. Some people automatically buy into this BS hook line and sinker! When I see this “line” I think of how dishonest these Libs are. But not Gerry, no siree!

    3. So, the fact that Iffy has spent almost all of his adult life outside of Canada is not to be considered a detriment to becoming the Prime Minister of Canada??? That’s what Gerry and all his other Liberal media buddies want all of us to buy into. Give me a bloody break!!
The fact is, this is a major negative for Iffy and his media enablers, and they know it . So they are doing everything they can do to create a narrative that casts these facts to be “normal as can be”. It’s no big surprise that Gerry is singing from that same song sheet.
He’s also the plays the trumpet on this song and dance.

Exactly my line of thinking, Nicola. My own preference of “attack ad” would be: “The Liberals would have you believe – insert lie, here – but the opposite is true. The Conservatives have actually – insert truth, here.

  • east of eden

And the Trudeau early 80s were great times? Check back and you'll see that the Trudeau early 80s were a disaster. The Chretien aftermath is also a disaster – check out health care system and municipal taxes which were affected by the Martin cutbacks in transfer payments. Check the EI rules which the Chretien government made so challenging for people to collect. Check the use of EI funds to create a faux surplus. Sorry – these tough times are GLOBAL tough times and not Tory tough times. If you were informed, you'd realize that Canada is faring better than most other countries thanks to competent steering by our PM.

  • terry1

Brett, typical tory that can't read in detail…..did I use the word “all” the press or simply the “Liberal” press?
That shows your bias is not logical.
All spending buy the parties is reported in detail to EC so it will be publicly available. Please move onto your next fairy tale.

  • terry1

I'd rather have a guy who made a name for himself as a CANADIAN while working abroad than a tight ass guy from some think tank who is trying to dump his right wing trash agenda on us. Too bad he's toast as this ad will prove once again he's overstepped his boundries and continues to diminish his own brand.

  • terry1

Actually no you can do better and drop further in the polls. That's what the Canadian public wants and is giving it to you in spades. 28% and dropping.. ho ho ho!!! No attack ad like that will get to Iggy's popularity.

  • pete e

The lines are OK, the images are better. But what’s with the commentator. He sounds humorless and sneering. He sounds like he likes to pull the wings off flies in his spare time. He sounds like Gordon Campbell looks.

Can’t they pull something like this off with a sense of humor? better music?

Ker: “Some observers will remember that Ignatieff once mused that if he didn’t ascend to the Prime Minister’s Office that Harvard would likely take him back.”

And, apparently, he's only taken a leave of absence from Hahvahd which means, of course, that that option is open to him — to simply walk away from the LPC and Canada if things don't go as the Count had planned.

Canada's got to close it's doors to two-passport Canadians. Either you pitch your tent in the True North Strong and Free or you don't bother to come here. As a one-passport Canadian, footing all the bills with very few privileges or perks, I'm feeling a little beleaguered. Enough, already!

  • Liz J

Mr Iggy has basically gone to bat for his Damsel in distress, MP Ruby D, referring to her treating the people in “her employ”…….. hello, she said she didn't employ them, she tossed that over to her brother. Does this mean he has decided the nannies are lying or is he just not up to snuff on the case?

It's gotta be tough selling yourself, touring around signing a book written to convince Canadians he has “true patriot love”. The book would have been more aptly titled “Opportunity Called”.

  • east of eden

From a guy who went from being a blogging tory to a Milton John.

  • terry1

Liz J…your book would be entitled “Out of touch with reality”

    joshaiden;

Can you show any evidence to support that claim? Sounds like BS.

Just maybe this ad is aimed at the CPC base, to give us talking points for the next several months.
Lots of comments re Wayne G living in the US for the past 19 yr. He was forced out of Canada by another guy in trouble with the law, named Peter. Does he not still have business interests in Canada, and probably still pays Canadian taxes on them.
There are other events MIMI missed, Chretain strangling a protestor, ordering protestors to be pepper sprayed, contracts written on napkins. Hey, Dalton could use some of Chretains methods on those protestors in Ont., both native and terrorist supporters. He could say, it is the liberal way, and order the RCMP to do it.

  • JD

I am an Iggy supporter and in no way does this infuriate me. This is not a dirty tactic, it is a lame one. Is this really the best the Tories could come up with? The next election will be a cakewalk with spots like this. Please keep them coming.

Obama might ask the opposition parties to take the terrorists of his hands and since the great socialist Obama spoke, they will accept. as the same time turning our beloved nation into a penal country.
Frankly wilson, I will not be surprised.

The ad is titled hypocrisy, but it’s an attack ad criticizing Ignatieff for running attack ads. Who’s hypocrisy is it talking about? And leaving the Tory Time are Tough Times line up there for that long is just dumb. The tag line ‘just visiting’ is decent, but for this ad, I think they should have gone with ‘We’re not even trying anymore’.

Mulroney never stole from the canadian public, the liberals did. The money which Schreiber gave Mulroney was Schreiber's.
Schreiber said that he gave thousand of dollars to CHRETIEN AND MARTIN, apparently and as usual the corrupt LMSM left that part of the story from the public.

And as an ALBERTAN, I am grateful for the GST cuts.

Any member of kangaroo court committee that went behind bars to comfront SCHREIBER like Thibault did showed be called to testify. I would love to see the corrupt CBC being called to the witness stand. Which reminds, Schreiber plans to sue CBC FIFTH ESTATE.
Wilson, isn't it amazing that the media is all over mulroney over few hundred thousand dollars which Schreiber gave yet that same pathetic is AFRAID to tackle the liberals millions upon millions of dollars which the libs stole from and millions of dollars still missing. WHAT A COMPARISON IN THE PRICE TAG BETWEEN MULRONEY AND LIBERALS.

  • Jen

Don't forget the pathetic CBC CTV PPG PP-they too showed be sprayed ,maybe it will wake them up to reality.
What is the word TOM CLARK like to use-ah yes!, 'COME CLEAN COME CLEAN'

No argument from me; I was quoting the last line of Stephen’s post and wondering aloud why that claim didn’t make it into the ad. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it could have been more effective that way.

    Two issues Stephen:

    1) Please provide a citation for “Some observers will remember that Ignatieff once mused that if he didn’t ascend to the Prime Minister’s Office that Harvard would likely take him back.” I am a keen observer and I have never heard this quote.

    2) You speculate on the provenance of the GritGirl ‘ads’ and then pontificate about how they always seem to appear on Warren’s blog first. Were you just late to the party today then with this one?

Very true, though kind of ironic coming from a party using an American proxy company to hide the identity of whoever's running Ignatieff.me.

I agree with Gerry Nichols. The ad is lame and Iggy’s quicksand position on everything is a more compelling reason to attack him.

Stephen, why is the age of the posts appearing in…I guess it’s German???

Yeah, they didn't test well among Liberals. Good thing that's the last group we're targeting.

  • Omanator

Why don't you get with it. Mulroony is a has been PM. This whole thing took place more than 20 years ago. People are no longer interested in what he says. This attack on Steven Harper comes from a man who could not say no to cah in a brown envelope.
