York—Simcoe

York—Simcoe stretched from the suburban communities north of Toronto to the southern shore of Lake Simcoe, encompassing the municipalities of Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and the portion of King Township north of Regional Road 31. The riding blended rapidly growing commuter towns with agricultural land, lakeside communities, and the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. The Holland Marsh, a fertile peatland drained for farming in the 1920s and 1930s, lay within the riding and was one of Ontario's most productive vegetable-growing areas.

Candidates

Peter Van Loan (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, first elected in 2004 and seeking a fifth consecutive term. A lawyer who had practised municipal and planning law before entering politics, Van Loan was of Estonian heritage on his mother's side. He served in multiple cabinet posts under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, including Minister of Public Safety and Minister of International Trade, and was the longest-serving Conservative Government House Leader in Canadian history, holding that role from 2011 to 2015.

Shaun Tanaka (Liberal) — A geography professor who had taught at both Queen's University and the University of Toronto. Tanaka grew up in Mount Albert and lived in Sharon with her husband and twin sons. She was active in community organizations including the East Gwillimbury Public Library and volunteered with the National Association of Japanese Canadians and the Maytree Foundation.

Sylvia Gerl (NDP) — The New Democratic Party candidate in the riding.

Mark Viitala (Green Party) — The Green Party candidate in the riding.

About the Riding

York—Simcoe was defined by the tension between agricultural heritage and suburban expansion. Bradford West Gwillimbury, the riding's largest urban centre, had grown rapidly as commuters sought more affordable housing within driving distance of Toronto, and subdivision development was consuming farmland on the town's edges. East Gwillimbury's communities of Holland Landing, Sharon, and Queensville were experiencing similar growth pressures, with the planned extension of Highway 404 northward expected to accelerate development.

The Holland Marsh produced a significant share of Ontario's carrots, onions, and celery, and the farming operations there employed seasonal workers from across the region. Lake Simcoe's environmental health was a concern for residents of Georgina and the surrounding lakeshore communities, as phosphorus loading and invasive species threatened water quality and the lake's recreational fishing economy. The Chippewas of Georgina Island, whose reserve occupied islands in the southern part of Lake Simcoe, faced infrastructure challenges including limited ferry service and housing shortages. Commuter transit was a persistent issue, with residents relying heavily on GO Transit bus routes and Highway 400 for travel to the Toronto employment market.
