It’s getting nasty in Alberta

mud

Well, that didn’t take long. After Alberta Premier Alison Redford promised a few days ago to run a positive campaign, this tweet from one of her staffers regarding Redford’s chief political opponent Danielle Smith from the Wildrose Party,

Amanda Wilkie is listed as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director of the Office of the Premier (Southern Alberta Office).

Redford cited former Premier Ed Stelmach’s concern about the current election,

Redford says recently, on what she says “must have been a particularly heavy day,” she thought about the speech Premier Ed delivered when he threw in the towel. At the time, Stelmach warned of a “profound danger” that this very election would focus “on personality and U.S-style negative attack politics.”

“He was very specific about that and he was very right,” says Redford, calling this “a pretty emotional time right now in Alberta.”

This latest campaign gaffe comes after the PCs were accused of push polling — Smith’s own father was even allegedly a target of the tactic.

Alberta politics is getting a bit nasty. And as for Wilkie’s tweet? She later apologized,

UPDATE: Danielle Smith has responded,

March 31, 2012 (Calgary, AB): Today Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith issued the following statement in response to comments made by a Staffer in Premier Redford’s Calgary office regarding the Wildrose Family Pack.

“In the last day the question has been raised about why I don’t have children of my own. When David and I married in 2006 we intended to have children together. After a few years we sought help from the Calgary Regional Fertility Clinic. I appreciated the support and assistance of the caring staff as we went through tests and treatments, but in the end we were not successful.

“I consider myself very fortunate to have a terrific stepson, Jonathan, David’s son from a previous marriage. I am also blessed to have grown up in a large family with four siblings who have given me the opportunity to be the auntie of 5 terrific nieces and nephews: Emily, Sam, Chloe, Seyenna and Logan.

“Family is very important to me and I consider this to be a very personal matter. I will not be commenting on it further.”

UPDATE: Alison Redford has responded,

Edmonton, AB – Premier Alison Redford released the following statement today:

“Alberta is made up of all types of families. Each one has a story. Each one is unique. There is no one type of family that is more authentic than the other.

Last night, a tweet was sent that was entirely inappropriate. It was hurtful and does not reflect my values nor those of my campaign in any way.

Once I became aware of the tweet, I called Danielle Smith immediately. I look forward to speaking with her privately.

The young woman who authored the tweet has resigned from her position. From that action I know she understands the gravity of her actions.”

The “fine” part of the apology makes it sound pretty insincere.

I find it a bit rich that Redford was finding it a “heavy day” when it so far appears it has been her campaign people and now staff that have played all of the dirty cards. This extremely low blow tweet example and what I would categorize as a spoiled brat, insincere apology are simply the tone of the whole team.

They have created it, they wear it.

I see nothing wrong with her comment.  Of course, the twitter machine will huff and puff and claim anything is an attack to whip up partisanship. It comes down to proven quantity and team vs unproven quantity and team. Foolish to switch parties for wrong reasons.  Or twitters…

The Politically Corrupt…uh, I mean the Progressive Conservatives are the only ones slinging and mud

Amanda is a bit player. She used to work in Danielle’s office — her dad was the WRA accountant. Well, one day the “family” up and left the WRA to head back to the PC camp and daughter and papa have been bad-mouthing Danielle and the WRA ever since . . .

There are many medical reasons a woman does not have children.  That is the lowest of low comments and her apologize is not sincere.  She should be fired from her job with the premier.

True re: medical reasons to not have children. There are also non-medical reasons that people choose to not have children. “Freedom of Choice” means just that. It’s not always about abortion, it’s not always about not having children, or having them. It’s called “choice” for a reason. I have a child, but just as easily might not have. It’s a choice. I made mine, Alison made hers, Danielle made hers, as millions of Canadian women have. To single out a women, and scorn her, for not having children for WHATEVER reason, is so friggin’ tacky. It’s beyond the pale.

Apology sounded as if it was at gun point.

Go back through Amanda Wilkie’s past tweets and you’ll find some other “winners”.  This one from Feb 1st is particularly telling:

@evmenzies I called #wrp ignorant rednecks, not conservatives. Literacy is a great thing. #pcaa

Obviously a sincere and willing apology. ;)

  • Canadiansense

Decoding the different language women and men speak:

    FINE
This is the word women use to end an argument when they feel they are right and you need to shut up . Never use “fine” to describe how a woman looks – this will cause you to have one of those arguments.

I doubt the former staffer gives a fig about your feelings or her thoughts about the WRP. Politics is NASTY: the realization she will be unemployed because she picked the wrong team?

    Common Sense is not common.
Never say, write anything you are not comfortable in owning or capable of defending. It will stick with you and be may be taken out of context.

Maybe they we asked to leave?

  • wilson

Wasn’t it Carter who said something degrading about Ed Stalmach’s  way of speaking, and had to apologize for that too?
Those nasty ‘progressives’ are on the REDford team now, where they belong.
Hopefully they will also be on the unemployed team April23

Wow. Talk about devaluing the role and importance of a step-parent, as Danielle is.  As part of the 1/3 of families that are blended, that is truly offensive.

  • johndemerais

it’s sad that you actually had to explain that , but thanks

  • Jammiez

I just ache reading Danielle’s response.  What a deeply personal and painful thing to have to disclose because of some stupid, thoughtless, childish rant from the PCs.  Danielle, I am very sorry you had to put up with this nonsense.

  • Bec

So true! Danielle has responded in a truly dignified, classy manner and frankly none of this was anyone’s business. This individual is however an example of what so many of us have sensed is wrong with the PC’s and in particular, the Redford team. It’s a mirror image of how I personally feel this party and this leader would treat Albertan, with no respect and callous disregard.

It’s all about POWER and CONTROL. I hope they are hanging their heads in shame today.

The staffer will get hired back after the election.

  • Curmudgeon

The first time I voted provincially was for the Lougheed Team, although the Socreds beat them that round. I supported the PCs every election and in between such as serving on the consituency booard until Stelmach became leader. I sat that election out but now strongly back Wildrose. Redford is too red and Smith seems to be the leader Alberta needs.

Danielle Smith is going to make an awesome premier.

Just leave the details on this forum. Thank you.

     That sounds like our Amanda.

  • Anonymous

She’ll just slink off with Carter somewhere.

About how long ago did they pack up?

  • DougM

I don’t doubt it was painful but I’m not sure she minded.  Utter stupidity coming from a Political opponent is a gift of huge porportions.  By stating plainly how she is without kids but still engaged with them, she knocked this one out of the park.

no she can’t control them, but she hired them and that is a leadership issue.
