Carolyn Bennett sings Liberal version of O Canada

or… as she calls it, “the gender neutral, secular, bilingual” version of O Canada.

Here are the lyrics from her website in case you were wondering,

O Canada!

Our home and native land!

Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

Ton histoire est une épopée

Des plus brillants exploits.

O Canada

glorious and free!

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

    OMG, I’m speechless!!

  • bettie

Am I correct in thinking Carolyn Bennett is the most unhinged MP currently serving? How anyone would vote for her is beyond me. She screams in QP (although possibly she has been toned down by someone, as she hasn’t been as flagrant of late). She craves attention. This is her newest attempt. I hope there is a good CPC candidate in her riding next election, and that she is turfed.

  • David

Was she twittering or something during the singing or does she not know the words?

  • хуй

It’s good to see the Liberals hard at work tackling the tough issues.

  • Ronlynn

The words reflect her looks – hideous!

  • Beer and Popcorn

This is the same party that ignored all the sacrifices of the Canadian Military in conflict and tried to summarize our contribution under the politically-correct guise of ‘peacekeeping’.

Political correctness and revisionist history is their thing!
Can we really expect anything but?

  • Frances

    I much prefer the version:
    Oh Canada
    Terre de nos aieux
    True patriot love
    In all thy sons command
Car ton bras sait porter l’epee
    Il sait porter la croix
From far and wide, O Canada
We stand on guard for thee.

Et ta valeur, de foi trempe
Protegera nos voyers et nos droits
Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

I wonder if Iggy was singing, especially the part, “Our home and native land”. Seeing Bennet sing reminds me of Jean Stapleton singing the theme song from “All In The Family”.
And I REALLY detest the mixed language versi0ns. Sounds like crap. French alone is fine. English alone is fine.

  • Liz J

How be we dub this Dr Bennett’s Looney Tune?

  • Jckirlan

I knew that Bennett was a kook and quite possible mentally unfit, but the “normal” wheels have fallen off the Liberal bus. The road to perdition is paved with good intentions and Liberal votes.

Whenever the Conservatives sing the anthem, they almost always sing ONE version: they start off in English, use the French version in the middle and end with the English version. No cacophony.
This is the way the Conservatives sing it:
    O Canada!
    Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
    Il sait porter la croix!
    Ton histoire est une épopée
    Des plus brillants exploits.
    God keep our land
    Glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

But when the “progressives” get into the act, we get a mish-mash similar to Roseanne Barr’s or Christina Aguilera’s version of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl.

Could we please all stick to ONE version?

Personally, I would prefer this version, beginning with the French:
    “O Canada!
Terre de nos aîeux,

    Ton front est ceint
de fleurons glorieux!
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

    From far and wide,
O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”

But whichever is used, let’s all try to stick to ONE version. The national anthem should not be the song freelancers choose to cover whichever way they choose.

Oh, and Carolyn Bennett and Marlene Jennings are both certifiable (Solely my opinion, not the blog owner’s opinion)

What a freak show, thank God the years of liberal wins are over.

It’s troubling to see as sharp a political mind as Stephen Taylor’s preoccupied with trivialities like this.

Of course, the regulars here just lap this stuff up.

  • Gabby in QC

So can we assume you’re not a fan of the board game Trivial Pursuit?

Sometimes trivial pursuits alleviate the boredom of reading the repetitive silly condescending putdowns from people who think they’re superior to everyone else.

Kenn2, time to outgrow the superiority complex.

Seen on a poster many years ago:
“Those of you who think you’re perfect are really annoying to those of us who are”

  • Anonymous

If the right-wing needs to highlight trivialities like this as part of their campaign strategy, it doesn’t speak well for their assessment of their base. Of course, maybe they’re bang on. That’s troubling too.

(I’m not superior… just different. Embrace diversity!)

  • Gabby in QC

Part of a “campaign strategy?” You’re kidding, right?

    “Embrace diversity!”
Oh, but I do, unlike some highly placed Liberals whose battle cry is “I want my Canada back!”
    How’s that for “diversity”?

  • Anonymous

Part of a “campaign strategy?” You’re kidding, right?

Ah. You probably think Mr Taylor runs this website, and is prominent in the right-wing blogosphere, as a hobby.

  • Gabby in QC

    Oh no! … another conspiracy!

The Conservative Party has and will continue to run electoral campaigns.
    Stephen is a conservative.
Therefore Stephen must be running the Conservatives’ [non-existent] campaign.

No conspiracy. Who does Stephen work for? Is he or is he not a public conservative pundit and Media Director for the NCC, often making comments on the public record? It’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  • Gabby in QC

“Is he or is he not a public conservative pundit and Media Director for the NCC, …”

So now we’re into interrogations à la McCarthy?
“Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Conservative Party?”

Look, Stephen can speak for himself, and he can do what he bloody well wants to do … but to say that this blog post of his is part of the Conservative Party’s campaign strategy is bunk.

    Your innocence is charming.

Tell me if I’ve got this correct: The Lib$ are all conniving crooks, the media are their willing partners who deliberately seek out ways to bash the CPC. But this is just a nice little blog where plain decent Canadians happen to speak their minds. Have I got it?

  • batb

Sorry, Carolyn Bennett singing anything would be appalling. :- (

  • Gabby in QC

    “Have I got it?”
    No, you don’t.

You see, dear Kenny, you assume that all conservatives speak as one, that each and everyone of us gets his/her talking points from the PMO, that we all speak as one.

You cannot remotely conceive of, much less accept, the notion that we conservatives are individuals, that we express individual opinions that, yes, may coincide with the opinion of other conservatives, but not necessarily in toto.

That’s part of your “progressive” condescending attitude, isn’t it? Plus, you can’t seem to get away from a collectivist POV. Maybe in your neck of the woods it works that way.

It’s been a pleasure, as always.

Each of those “points” are without proof. They are assumptions or constructs of your own making. Also quite amusing to see you (falsely) accuse me of attitudes towards Conservatives that you and others always express about Liberals.

  • Mthielen

I also hate the two language version of our anthem.
Would love to hear the conservatives sing The Maple Leaf forever when it is there turn next. Then listen to the howls.

  • Dan

I have nothing to say for this version of the national anthem. Keep what we already have, and someone please get Bennett to SHUT UP!

  • DougM

Why is it that the Liberals hate anything about Canada so much they have to change its very identity? Can you even imagine other country’s deciding every few years to take another crack at putting their own schtick into a National anthem? Theoretically at least, you’d imagine that a country with a pretty rich history would be able to take pride in it instead of trying to change it constantly so it better reflects their own limited viewpoint. Is it a last gasp attempt in groupthink to convince everyone theirs is the only religion that counts?

  • Liz J

The song has ended but the malady lingers on………

  • batb

    LOL!

  • Gabby in QC

    Liz J, I love it!

  • Ed

Uh Doug, forgive me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it the harperites who tried to change it just last year? Do they hate Canada too? Pretty sure they attempted to make it gender-neutral as well.

  • DougM

There is, unfortunately some truth in that. It was a trial balloon which was quickly dropped. Let’s see if the Liberals have the good sense to run from it as well. Bets?

  • DougM

No offense Gabby, but French in Canada is a regional issue. And as most will tell you, you will never learn an language that there is not sufficient people around to use it and practise with it and that is certainly not the case west of Ottawa. Out here, Chinese is far more prevalent than french. I have no problem at all with an English and a French version reflecting the make up of the country, but why would you have a version which combines portions of a National Anthem that 75% of the country, don’t know what their singing? It don’t make much sense to me.

Stuck with Carolyn Bennett as my MP for another 4 years…I have no understanding what her accomplishments are ……She insults her constituents……..and focuses on rewriting the national anthem in high unemployment recession…….Why people in my riding vote for her is beyond the comprehension of a  logical intelligent indvidual.
