Conservatives release ad slamming the Coalition’s iPod tax

Here’s the audio:

I’ve made it into a YouTube video… so people could, y’know, share it. What do you think of the ad?

The Coalition, stupid people, stupid ideas!

“The Liberal Party does not support the iPod levy. It is not sustainable in a world of changing technology, and is unpopular with consumers,” said Marc Garneau, Liberal Industry, Science and Technology Critic.”

What is the purpose ot this tax? People buy mp3 players to put music on them which they buy from iTunes and other online stores. I am not in favor of this tax

Yet the Liberals support “a new Private Copying Compensation Payment of $35 million to be transferred to Canadian artists each year”. How is new funding raised?

  • Jeff

Perhaps this “ad” should read: Your Conservative Government will lie about anything…”“The Liberal Party does not support the iPod levy. It is not sustainable in a world of changing technology, and is unpopular with consumers,” said Marc Garneau, Liberal Industry, Science and Technology Critic.”

I like the tax… I’ll pay $75 dollars extra for an iPod that I’m POSITIVE the Liberals would distribute this to the Canadian artists. This means that I can download everything and anything I want for free because I have already paid for it via my up front contribution right?Right?

I do not like to be stupid but aside from the tax issue, why is this a bad thing?

  • batb

Why am I not surprised that the Three Leftist Amigos are supporting a money grab through taxation?

Their whole agenda is about money they can throw to the unwashed masses in order to get their votes. ‘Only problem is, it’s usually the hard-working, independent-thinking, we’ll-take-care-of-ourselves-thank-you-very-much-if-you-take-your-gol-darned-hands-out-of-our-pockets middle class that gets taxed to the max to foot the bill.

Who will rid us of these meddlesome socialists?

  • Egsaint Pierre

This has been made quite clear by the Libs: Private Copying Compensation Payment would come out of general revenues. That means no tax or levy.

Where do “general revenues” come from?

I’m not that impressed by it. The ad makes no mention of Ministers Tony Clement and James Moore blind support for US advocated digital rights management.

I believe that the ad should mention that if I buy music that is digitally locked that I will not be able to burn that music to CD or play it on a competing MP3 player (if my iPod dies).

I think the Conservatives should start using humour in their ads (rather than use the same old overly serious, brooding music in the background).

The coalition actors are so absurd they provide perfect material for the kind of truly biting satire that it would be difficult for even their die hard followers to take them seriously after seeing them mocked in a well written series of ads.

Hey, get Monte to write them. He’s got just the right comedic tone to carve them up ;-)

  • Kelly

I am sure this ad will play well during the shopping season. Gawd, is the coalition that stupid? Concerned about the 50% who do not vote? I guarantee you have their attention. o.O

  • Bec

Go for it Stephen, take it home! Based on the comments DEFENDING the Liberals/Coalition, this is hitting a big nerve.
They’d tax any Canadian if it filled THEIR ideological agenda and this WILL resonate with the youth and those Canadians that are trying to keep up to speed from a technological pov but finding it a challenge.

From overtaxation, as well as EI funds and Public Service pension plans “borrowed” by the Liberals and dumped into general revenues to create faux surpluses.

  • Liz J

    Exactly!

  • Liz J

The timing couldn’t be worse, their denials speak volumes.

The best the hapless Liberals can hope is people are too busy to bother with politics because we all know how the Liberals love to tax in order to spend on whatever will get them the votes.

  • Alberta Girl

Typical socialist….hasn’t a flippin clue how “general revenue” is generated.

The damage the CPC has done to Canada’s global standing is more and more apparent, and now Flaherty plans to mess up the Canada Pension Plan, … so Hey, let’s talk about an iPod tax!! Wheee!!
